UMich Chances

Hi I’m a high school junior and I really love michigan ann arbor. I’ve been stressing over my chances to get in since I know plenty of people are smarter than me. Please be honest!

Major: Biomedical Engineering

GPA: 3.92 but probably 3.86 at the end of the year
ACT: 30
Recommendations should be good because teachers and coaches love me
Clubs: book club, jazz band, yearbook, forensics, track, NHS, volunteering club, tutoring
Leadership: caption head in band, tutoring, and leader helping kids learn instruments
I think I have pretty good essay skills

Are you in-state or OOS? The ACT average for CoE is 33 , I would work on raising your ACT score, preferable to 34 or higher. Check with Naviance how others from your high school faired with your ACT and GPA.

You should apply to LSA, then transfer into CoE. Your ACT is a little low for CoE :frowning: Good luck. You can still make it. They’re big on extracurriculars so that will be your edge. If you are in state, you have a better shot. Keep us updated! See you on campus

^^^^Before you consider going the route noted above I would take great care to understand exactly what would be required for you to complete in an internal transfer to CoE. Many universities actively discourage having students apply to a less competitive program and then switch into a more competitive program by making these types of internal transfers extremely difficult/rare. I don’t know how it works at UM’s CoE. But I would certainly work on trying to bring up your ACT score.

I’m out of state. I’m not really sure how to up my act since 30 felt like a miracle. I don’t want to go to a school unless I’m accepted into the department I want, so I wouldn’t transfer in from LSA.

Low chances, but I have seen it happen…good luck!

I know an in state applicant with 3.8+ GPA and ACT 33 got rejected a couple years ago. ACT 30 s below the mid 50 for CoE. However, I also know another is state female student got accepted with ACT 29 but with very high Math score and legacy. For you from OOS, tt is a reach even for LSA.

You might want to consider applying to Nursing or Kineseology.

Why would I apply to either of those if I want to be a biomedical engineer?

They are easier to be admitted to than LS&A and you can transfer just as easily to engineering. If you are in-state, a slightly higher ACT (especially with a high math score) would vastly increase your chances to be directly admitted to CoE. If you are OOS, you will need a larger ACT increase than instate. CoE median ACT composite is 33. Females also have had a slight admission preference as the CoE wants a more balanced class.

Considering you’re OOS, your chances are very low, as CoE is extremely competitive. If you’d rather apply to CoE than LSA or another school and transfer, you’ll definitely want to raise your ACT 3-4 points to be competitive.

Act too low for coe even for an in state person that is not competitive enough

Is that GPA weighted or unweighted?

Unweighted

Well you can give it a shot! Just don’t let yourself get too invested. You’ll do great in life no matter where you go to school.

You have plenty of time to raise the ACT. Best of luck!

Try to raise your act to at least a 34 preferably 35 to be competitive for out of state for coe
