Hey!! I'm reeading the most amazing book I've ever read in my life called "The Freedom Writer's Diary." Most of you guys probably know the movie, but the movie doesn't even compare with the book. This book taught me so much and has encouraged me to start an anti-prejudice club. Well, I was going to write a letter to my school board asking if there is anyway possible to make this book required reading in school like "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Odyssey." We have gangs, racism, violence, etc at most schools in my district and, honestly, I think this book would make people 2nd guess their actions and inspire people to make better decisions. Is it worth to send a letter trying to convince them? This book has made me burst into tears plenty of times. It opened a door I never knew was there, and know I will think more of my actions and will try harder in english by just watching about how these kids grew in their english class by reading these books.
Also, I think it would help kids with suicidal thoughts and kids saying that they "hate their lives" a new perspective of what bad really is and they would appriciate thei lives more.
It also changed my opinion in english. It used to be my least favorite subject BY FAR!! Now, I think it may become my favorite.

You definitely should. I can tell from reading this post that you clearly feel strongly about this subject... I think that simply by reading your own post, you'll answer your OWN question =)

Of course. You obviously feel very strongly about it, and who knows? If you go for it, it might happen. Not only would you get what you want, but it'll give an English teacher something to write about in a recommendation.

I've read the book, but I honestly think you'd have a much easier time if you're a minority, since the club is reaching out to gang violence, racism, etc. and let's face it, the victims of that are most of the time minorities.

Also, where do you live? Every district can have a gang or two, but you're not going to be fighting much gang violence / racism if you live in a pretty decent predominantly white neighborhood.

I live in Florida and I go to a school in the ghetto..... I don't live in it though. I've witnessed some pretty crazy things in our area though. There are always broken bottles smashed on the streets, gun shoots in skool, the locals even throw rocks at our cars while we try and drive home.

Go for it. One of the summer reading books for an honors english class was changed this year because one of the teachers had a niece in another school district who said that a certain book was one of the best books she ever read. And so now that book is on our list too. It may work out for you too.

It would be a good college application essay :D

^^ Actually, I was planning to volunteer at an orphanage in Vietnam or Korea rising senior summer. And I'm glad you're back!!! :D

Good idea. I really want to read that book and would hope it was on my summer reading list.

Yaay!
Though I read in a book somewhere that writing about trips abroad is cliche...? Volunteering sounds fun though.
I guess you could make it work...

bump.......

bump......

fizix is back!!
I knew you couldn't stay away...
