is it worthy to double major

I mean for a business school student, is it worthy to double major? on one hand that will bring down but on the other hand will it help me significantly in seeking a job?

I'm majoring in both Accounting and Finance. However, I found out if I only majored in Finance I could potentially graduate in 2.5 years because of all the credits I am coming with.

but dont you need twice credits than single major>? and which school are you in?

No I only need about 30-40 more credits to double major. I'm going UT Austin.

so you only take part of your minor major ?which is accounting

No I take all of it just some parts overlap.

Here's the Accounting outline:

and the Finance outline:

While some of the courses are different, there is a good chunk that is the same so I don't need to take the course twice.

A lot of students at Stern double major because it's only an additional 12-16 credits.

really? Stern will very likely be my future school so can you tell me the choices of double majors?

i'm curious as well as I want to pursue a double major as well. Do businesses look highly upon those with two degrees?

^not really

Is it better to do double major in Economics and Finance (with no electives/minor) or to Major in Finance (With a Minor and extra electives) with a higher GPA?

For:

Business School
Graduate School (economics)
Law School
Getting a job

why do you say "^not really"?

rolen27, you just repeated my question basically

I guess it really depends on what you want to do and what you're interested in. I don't think a double major is all that necessary and wouldn't do it for the sake of being a double major. It's best to demonstrate proficiency in stuff you're good at, not take a bunch of courses just to put some impressive course list on your transcript. Of course if you have equal interest in finance and accounting, for example, and have what it takes to complete the double major, then by all means do it. But you don't have to, and I don't think employers will really care that you did only one major. It's also not a bad idea to double major or minor in a liberal arts study. Like finance and English. Or accounting and political science. People often forget these options.

rolen, I think whatever you'll do better in will be the best choice. I know that for graduate economics programs, you're going to need a lot of math. Too many econ majors don't even go beyond Calc 1 or 2 and find they aren't ready for the graduate level quantitative courses.

Ya but you only asked if it was worth it for a business school applicant.. I'm asking if a double major is also worth it for Law School, Grad school, Job out of undergrad.

ok, but will it look if i double major and maintain the same GPA( assume) when I am looking for a job?

look Rolen27 and liangshengtm, wait till you actually get to college and a lot of these questions are going to be answered just by observing things. Stop worrying about whether to double major or not and instead focus on getting into college. A lot of career questions of what kinds of majors get what jobs, if double majoring will help get job X, etc can be answered by the students at your school much better than the people of CC. Once you get a facebook account you'll have the ability to look at the previous year's graduates and see what jobs they have and what degree combos they used and this will give you a better idea of what you need to do. For now, just worry about getting into college.

ok, one thing should be asked now for me, when do I pick whether double major or not, when I am filling the application form ? or when I first step into the college? or during the gap between first and second year in college?

Thanks DFCA, Im attending college this fall so I'll ask people I guess.

Liang, It can be done at any time but you should have a degree plan so you dont stay longer than 4 yrs.

oh, thx rolen and dcfca, but I just wondering in what kinda cases people take double major
