should i go to JHU at all if i m not that interested in science?

depends what are you interested in? for intl. relations its not so bad.

econ i hear is not the brightest.

each college has its strengths and weaknesses.

As for this whole thing about Hopkins having a very weak econ department, I find that very hard to believe. If they have the best IR program in the country, and IR is a multidisciplinary major(with econ being a strong component of it), they must have a good econ dept., or else their IR program wouldnt be so highly respected. Anyone else have any thoughts on this, because I'm only speculating and would like to know a little more about their economics program.

i hear that JHU is good in IR, French, Writing Seminars, and others... humanities is good... JHU is tied w/ Cornell for #14 on US News Best colleges... that should give you an idea of how good it is

kams,
what school in syr do u go to? Im not too far from syracuse

Fayetteville-Manlius (FM... its in the suburbs)

All I know is that JHU is the unchallenged number 1 for BME. For anything else (with the exception of premed), it is either very respected or just good, not extraordinary.

JHU is also #1 in Public Health and Writing Seminars. Its IR program is top 10, and its French program is highly respected.

i know a few people from fm. Our school goes to their mun conference at SU each year. In addition, I hear they have an insanely good xc team

way to think about this after you are accepted :)

hey thats cool, i went to CNYMUN a few times... yea our xc team is good i believe, and some other teams... SciOlym (which i dont really want to delve into, they get plenty of attn) etc... who from Fm do you know (you can PM me if you want)

Yes, JHU's BME program is considered unmatched. But Johns Hopkins has several other outstanding programs that are ranked among the Top 10 nationally- which in my opinion, suggests they are outstanding- considering the small size of Hopkins compared to other leading research universities (Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard, etc.).

All the academic programs at Johns Hopkins' A&S and Engineering schools are either excellent or outstanding- compared to most colleges in America.

The outstanding/highest ranked programs include: Writing Seminars, English, Art History, History, German, Biology, Neuroscience, BME, Environmental Engineering, Public Health and International Studies (an interdisciplinary major). Edward Fiske lists Philosophy as one of JHU's strongest programs but I have not seen any current Philosophy rankings. I know the French government recognizes JHU as one of 5 Centers for Excellence in French Education in the US (and awards JHU grants annually) however, the full time French faculty at JHU is small (JHU has a lot of visiting professors), and this negatively affects JHU in the French rankings I've seen done by the National Research Council. In any case, language classes at JHU are small and Hopkins has programs in Europe.

Don't forget biophysics (JHU has one of the few undergrad programs), Near Eastern Studies (extremely strong!) and music (come on- they have a conservatory!). These aren't usually "ranked" by publications...

Your're right JHU is also one of the top few schools for biophysics and middle eastern studies (JHU professors translated the Bin Laden tapes).

I also forgot to mention that Johns Hopkins is highly regarded for Italian- which is one if the majors offered in its Romance Languages & Literatures Department. JHU has 2 schools in Italy- Villa Spelman in Florence and SAIS in Bologna...

Oh, I almost forgot to mention JHU's excellent Earth & Planetary Sciences Department. US News ranks JHU among the top 11 national universities for geology and the NASA Space Telescope is on the JHU campus.

does BME prepare you for pre-med?

BME prepares you for pre-med...
bioMEDical engineering

yea...

All pre-med is is a set of required classes u need to get into med school.
your major shouldnt matter. I'm plan to major in neuroscience and minor in classics or maybe music.

JHU has a number of top rated humanities and social sciences programs. obviously you should go there.

i’m one of the few humanities majors at hopkins (double major in English and Art History) and i have to saw that ALL humanities departments here are superb. i’ve even taken classes in smaller departments like museums & society and entrepreneurship & management (somehow in the engineering school) and they were top-tier as well. hopkins is honestly the world’s best kept secret and a perfect fit for anyone who honestly likes to learn.

Agree. UG admission needs to do a better job of marketing it.
