Cost of Attendance for OOS is 47K per year. Pretty steep. Is Kelley Business School worth it?

what other options do you have ?

We haven’t heard how much merit aid (if any) Indiana will give, but from website it looks like 11K is the largest OOS automatic scholarship. Even with that, it would be around 36K for cost of attendance. Mizzou is offering 10K in merit aid which puts the COA around 29K. Is Kelley that much better than going to Mizzou’s business school? Alabama is also offering nice merit aid, so both Mizzou and Bama would be much cheaper than Kelley but Kelley is the well known better ranked school. Don’t know if it’s worth it to pay that much more $?

@paperlady: Where do you live? Always look In-state if possible first. If you MAX out your opportunity it becomes exponential as your kid goes through life. There is no way to describe the difference between starting your fledgeling career with 100K debt versus 0. If your kid goes to an accredited good school and maxes it out and looks for Internships etc. then they will do just fine.

But to answer your question, Kelley (maybe UMich) is really as good as it gets for Non-private, Non -Ivy.

So, if money is really the issue, go elsewhere close to home , and make the best of it. Your child will do perfectly great!

But the best education without completely blowing the bank is Kelley.

Thanks for reply@goodkidsdad. We live in California and the UCs are hard to get into and expensive. Cheaper to go out of state in most cases due to the merit $.

All the OOS schools applied to have offered merit money with the exception of Indiana which we are still waiting to hear about merit $ but did get direct admit to Kelley. First choice is Indiana but it will cost much more than Alabama or Mizzou because they both are offering generous merit $. With Indiana’s COA, even if merit aid is offered it will still be more expensive than the other options.

I just wonder, will Indiana be that much better of an education and that much better of a job after graduation to warrant paying more, or are Alabama and Mizzou the way to go to keep cost manageable?

I agree that best way to start the career is debt free, so it makes me want to lean towards Alabama or Mizzou. Just feel like I might be short changing my kid on education if I say “no” to the opportunity to go to Kelley.

My D is an OOS direct admit to Kelley( with good merit money). Have you visited all 3 schools? For what it is worth undergrad Kelley is a top 10 B-school in the US News and Bloomberg-BusinessWeek rankings. I don’t know anything about Alabama and Mizzou business schools. One important thing to look for is where do the job recruiters come from. We visited many schools where the majority of recruiters were local ( eg. Pittsburgh for Pitt and Ohio for Ohio State). I suspect Alabama and Mizzou are similar. My D wants to end up in NYC or Chicago. Kelley has a more national scope of recruiters and gives her the best chance to end up where she wants to be. The infrastructure that Kelley has for job placement is outstanding. Compare it to Alabama and Mizzou. That doesn’t mean you can’t end up in the city where you want to be if you go to Alabama or Mizzou, it just might take longer to get there. We love IU, Kelley and Bloomington. If you can afford it, then go to IU.

@racquetdad is right. Bloomington Kelley is an awesome place to land a job in Commerce Centers like NYC, Chicago, etc.

By the way. The merit is based on entrance so if your kid meets the criteria they get it.

thanks @racquetdad and @Goodkidsdad.

Hi Paperlady, I just wanted to offer a perspective from a student. I’m currently a sophomore in Kelley triple majoring. I am OOS (Chicago). There are times when I contemplate the amount of money going towards my Kelley education, but almost always I’m reminded that I’m at one of the top business schools in the country, especially for public schools. Compared to other schools I think you’ll quickly realized that like previously stated, for a public university this is remarkably affordable. The quality of education here is outstanding. As you progress with Kelley the professors become increasingly incredible, many with extensive history in the fields they are teaching. Addressing concerns about after Kelley, job placement for the roughly 1200 students registered on the Kelley Connect website was about 92%, many scattered across the states but most going to Indianapolis, Chicago, and New York. I would like to add that many Kelley students take their degree remarkable places. It’s not uncommon to hear of Kelley students successful in foreign countries (increasingly Asia and Europe). Finally, look at the number of Kelley alumni occupying Fortune 500 companies…pretty incredible. I hope this helps and please message me for additional questions or concerns, good luck with your decision!

Thanks for your perspective, @ksbiu2017. IU and Kelley sound great. Just wish it was less money. Thanks again, appreciate the feedback.

Kelley is #1 with Recruiters. That’s worth a lot. Degree doesn’t mean much if you cant get a job, or the job you want.
