Ohio State, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland?

I’m in-state for Indiana, and interested in business or pre-med. However, are any of these other colleges listed worth OOS tuition? (Michigan is somewhat too expensive for me)

Run the Net Price Calculators for each (on their web sites). You may get aid based on your stats.

Wisconsin does not give merit aid (or much financial aid) to out of state students, and I don’t think Illinois does either. Ohio State may have automatic merit, I am not familiar with its programs.

Coming from an Indiana resident with a kid at Wisconsin – my view as a parent is that, an Indiana resident, interested in business, especially one eligible for direct admit to Kelley and for automatic scholarships etc., would be foolish to look at other publics, unless they have money to actually burn.

That sounds snarkier than I intend, but IU does a few things exceptionally well – and Jacobs School of Music and the Kelley School of Business are those things. Attending these premier programs on instate tuition is one of the wonderful benefits of being an Indiana resident.

Meet the Nov 1 deadline for automatic scholarships at IU, apply as a direct admit to Kelley, and enjoy the oportunities that are available!

Michigan does give FA, even for OOS students, but make sure to apply by Nov 1. I’d also apply to Purdue.

If you are confident that a major inside the Kelley School of Business is for you, then OOS tuition for the above listed schools seems foolish.

However, if you are unsure if a business related major is for you, then definitely consider your options. You are wise to include the overall academic reputation of the school as one of your considerations. It becomes a more important factor if you think it’s possible/likely that you would want to change majors at some point.

I am a passionate supporter of the education my kid has received at Wisconsin, but for someone thinking business or pre-med, instate at Indiana, makes enormous sense. We know a handful of pre-med kids at Bloomington who, because of their stats coming in, had all kinds of perks thrown at them, with guaranteed paid research positions in labs etc. And, as the advice for pre-med always includes the caution to minimize undergrad debt, using extra funds to go to WI etc just does not make good financial sense. I’m partial to the beauty of Madison, and to the internship opportunities for someone interested in government etc at Wisconsin, but for Kelley school or pre-med instate, IU just makes a lot of sense.

@Midewestofboys. What a great post above. Pre-Med at IU because of all of the connections as well as Kelley School at either Bloomington or Indianapolis is an awesome pathway.

Frankly, if you want the Pre-med route. IUPUI is far and away the easiest and and most mentor connected route. The campus is at IU Med Center is world class.

And Kelley Indianapolis has a 96% placement rate.
