Is loftable furniture a "must"?

I've heard McMahon is the best dorm because of cluster style, however its beds are fixed to the ground...so personally, would you rather room somewhere like McMahon with a bigger room/shared lounge area or somewhere like Lander with smaller rooms but loftable furniture?

And I’ve heard differently about McMahon, namely that the people in your cluster are the ones that you’ll mostly be chillaxing with (and not quite so much the other clusters). In essence, it isn’t the most social of the dorms (definitely compared to Lander).

But in that sense, it is what you make it…and 7 automatic people to hang out with sounds pretty social. Plus I’ll be meeting people in classes/clubs/etc so I’m not really worried about that part. What do you think about lofted furniture?

7 automatic people to hang out with, hopefully you get along with them all. If you don’t, then you’re stuck with them (unless you petition for room change).

How much stuff are you bringing? A lot of clothes, or not that much? A rice cooker (I see this a lot with Asians)? Water filter? Refrigerator?

Make a list of pros and cons for the dorms you’re interested in. Also, keep in mind that if you live in North Campus, apparently Greek Row can get REALLY LOUD after football games (especially if we win!). Some people are peeved by that, some just know to go someplace else to study, some don’t care, and others join in.

But the same can be said for any roommate. Again, I’m not really worried about not getting along with people because that’s all up to chance anyway (what if I chose Lander and ended up in a triple with two people I hated in close quarters rather than just in my cluster??) And I was planning on buying the fridge/microwave from campus rentals, and maybe bringing a tv, but I think that’s about it for big stuff. And my sister lived in McCarty and was never bothered by Greek row, so that shouldn’t be an issue :)

That’s true! =)

And you could be with 7 awesome people (I don’t really hear of many people hating their roommates/clusters, although it happens sometimes).

Hmm, so I visited a friend’s McMahon cluster once: This is what him and his roommate were able to stick in their room:
-Given dorm furniture
-A TV
-2 Desktop computers, 2 laptops, 2 extra screens (they dual screened their desktops, and they’re heavy gamers)
-a TON of tennis equipment
-Clothes. I dont know how much they brought, but it looked like quite a bit.
-All their books, extra study books, etc.

In terms of fridge/microwave, you should probably talk to your roommate about sharing one, because maybe one of you could get the fridge and the other, the microwave to split the cost, etc. Sounds like your sister could give some pointers as well, since she would know more than me about dorms =)

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately my sister only really knows about McCarty (that’s where most of her friends were). Did your friends room seem pretty cramped, or would a small fridge/microwave fit? (I’m planning on sharing appliances with roommate) also what all was in the lounge part of it?

They didn’t feel cramped (average sized guys, too). I think a fridge/microwave would fit - you’d just have to utilize space better (put away clothes a different way, etc.

I didn’t spend a ton of time in the lounge, so I don’t really remember. I may be mistaken but I think there were couches, an open area to just hang out, and I’m not sure if someone had brought a TV or if it was already there.

i know this is pretty off topic but… screw the dorms, live on greek row or another house with a bunch of guys. seriously ive heard so many bad things about the dorms. bad roomates, no one to talk to, nothing to do, crammed, etc. and from looking at them they really arent too nice. Frat is soo much better. and you could say hey but i dont want to get involved with all that partying, drinking and all those jerks. but really. there’s 26 or something frats im pretty sure and theres one for everybody. i’ve been rushing them and seriously each one is sooo much different. okay wayyy off topic but just saying.

Way off topic, because if I did Greek I’d be in a sorority  haha but yeah I think I’m gonna do a dorm

Also (directed to speedsolver or any other current college students), what is usually included in a dorm? (dresser?) are there drawers below the bed? Or is closet the only storage? Again, my sister is a pretty limited reference and she was in the dorms at UW 5+ years ago, so yeah. Thanks :)
