Is Loyola University of Chicago's downtown campus...

safe? I am recommending DePaul and Loyola as safeties to a friend's child applying to college this coming fall. I am pretty sure both campuses are surrounding areas are safe, but I am not sure. What are your thoughts?

Loyola's downtown campus is in a very safe part of downtown. It's located in the shopping and restaurant district. Safer than DePaul's downtown Loop campus which has little activity after dark as it's is surrounded by businesses, museums and parks.

... BUT... Loyola freshmen must live at the uptown Lake Shore campus, which has its own problems. None that can't be prevented by walking in groups and staying near campus though. Not that bad, because aside from the nearby bars and the ethnic restaurants a mile-long bus ride away, there's not much to do up there. Most people take the subway to Evanston, Lincoln Park (DePaul's main campus) or downtown.

Thanks ferryboat. So it is fair to say that both campuses are safe if one exercises good judgement (no wandering off alone at night etc...).

Yes, they're no UIC.
