I would like to apply to University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. I have checked prepscholar.com and it shows that the average GPA in that University is 3.83. I would be able to get that GPA if I take ap psychology this junior year, but my major is engineering, and I have only taken three classes that are related to my major (if ignore the math courses). Should I take regular computer science to increase my major courses, or should I take ap psychology to increase my GPA?
UIUC considers course rigor, make sure you’re taking a rigorous load of classes. You school advisor should be able to tell you if taking regular CS would still allow them to view your schedule as “most rigorous”.
After that UIUC requires at least 2 years of sciences with lab, but recommends 4. As long as you have 4 years of physics, chemistry, biology, etc., you’ll fine, then it’s back to insuring you have the “most rigorous” class load. A class in CS isn’t “required”, just make sure you have the lab sciences.
If your school can’t offer 4 years of lab sciences, that’s fine, they consider what your school can offer.
So, if you have the lab sciences, then AP psychology is fine to take. If you want to take the “regular” CS class, make sure your school guidance counselor will still consider that you’re taking the most rigorous schedule available at your school.
Good Luck!
If you’re having to dodge HS classes to ensure a particular GPA, you need to reassess your drive and ability to do engineering. It’s VERY hard and there will not be anyone there at UIUC to hold your hand. They’ll simply cast you aside. This is not meant to be harsh for its own sake, but rather a reality check regarding what you’re getting yourself into. Do you have the drive, desire and horsepower to succeed? Just know, your current strategy might get you in, but it won’t get you out…and that’s what matters.
