If CS in engineering, the middle 50% range for engineering last year was 30 to 33 ACT and top 8% to to top 2% class rank; that is about the range for CS by itself. Your ACT is below that range and likely your class rank is also meaning you should consider it a reach for CS engineering.

Beginning last fall, UIUC now has a math and computer science major in Arts & Sciences college (LAS). You can potentially get into that with somewhat lower rank and test score, although you should not assume a lot lower, and you may be within the middle 50% range now. The difference in the two majors is that engineering students have to take chemistry and physics courses that the LAS student does not, and the LAS student has take more higher level math courses than the engineering student. Both can take the same CS courses.

I think you have a pretty good chance of getting into the engineering CS.

My ACT was around 31 (33 in math, which is mainly what they want to see) and my UW GPA was also 3.7 at time of applying (its now higher, straight A’s in senior year).

However, I was kind of a special case (created a lot of my own Apps, had an internship with a University of Maryland ECE professor, proficient in programming). Just make sure you express ur STRONG, and i mean STRONG interest in computer science. They told me on day 1 computer science is less about your academics and more about your experiences and achievements.

do you think that with an act score of 30 and gpa around 3.8 i could get into computer science LAS?

Having been accepted to the University of Illinois starting this Fall as a Computer Science major I figure I could probably offer you a little knowledge. I have a weak GPA, but decent test scores, and I was able to get into CS. I had a 33 ACT, but only a 3.3 UW GPA, and an 18% class rank. This however, with my two essays(I suggest you work extra hard on these essays, no one ever gives them enough credit.) were enough to get me into the U of I CS program. Now, remember, composite scores are nice, but for engineering majors what really matters are your math and science scores. You want them to probably be at if not above your composite. Also, I do believe that whether or not you are in state has some bearing, so you might want to tell people that when you ask for a chance. Another bit of advice, apply early application. It might seem like something insignificant, but I think it makes you look excited to go to the U of I.

I hope my advice is in some way beneficial to you. And now for my final verdict.

In State: I’d say you’ve got a good shot.
Out Of State: It’ll be tough.

thanks for your reply
