Is Michigan worth $25,000 more per year than UVA?

I am most likely going to major in something physics/math/computer science/engineering related

Michigan is better in the sciences, no doubt about that.

totally my personal preference, but I think UVA is probably worth $25,000 more that UMich…therefore, in answer to your original question, absolutely NOT

No, it’s not. Both are world class educational institutions.

^^like I said, personal preference…yes, both are world class academic institutions…

Rodney. You said that Virginia was “probably worth $25,000 more than U-Mich.” I say neither school is worth $25,000 more than the other.

Actually all of you are wrong. Without knowing the OP’s financial status, you cant answer the question.

If OP is a billionaire, Umich maybe worth $25000 more per year to him because $25000 to him is nothing (think about the law of diminishing return backwards in terms of wealth)

If OP is a lower-middle class family, obviously not.
So dont jump to conclusions

UVa does not have a world class engineering school; it’s not even the best engineering school in the state. So if you want to major in physics/math/computer science/engineering, you should think again whether it is worth it.

Unless your folks are very wealthy, Michigan is not $25,000/year better than UVa.

I’m upper middle class, combined income of roughly 225,000 but I have 2 siblings who are going through college as well

In other words I’m getting no financial aid whatsoever

Absolutely not! No point in wasting $25,000 for a school that is practically equal to UVA.

Michigan isn’t “practically equal” to UVA in physics/math/computer science/engineering, Michigan is most definitely a step ahead.

I meant that in a reverse way dilksy. As in UVA is almost equal to UMich. Regardless, I don’t think 25k a year is really worth it for a school that is only a step ahead. Unless your Bill Gates of course :)

UVa (USNWR grad ranking):

Math - #40
Physice - #36
Chem - NR
Computer Science - #29
Mech Engr - #38 (undergrad NR)

UVa is one of my favorite schools but I can’t recommend going there for science or engineering.

UVA is much higher in science than people are listing… as for engineering, no it’s not very good.

Michigan isn’t weak in any of it’s academic disciplines.

For a savings of $25K, I would take UVa. $100,000 more for Michigan is ridiculous. I would pick UVa in a heartbeat for the price. Both schools are equally as amazing (its not like your chosing between Michigan and South East State University or something, its UVA which is a great school).

As I stated before, It isn’t worth $25,000/year more to attend a comparable school.

225K/year is not just upper middle class, that’s wealthy. Assuming you’re parents are paying (or atleast providing substantial support), it would seem like you can afford to go to a better school.

In another thread in here someone posted the average starting salaries for degrees in different engineering fields. Look at the same from UVA and make you’re decision based on that.

That is a good point QwertyKey. Seriously, if I lived in VA and wanted to attend a good engineering school, I’d probably pick VA Tech over UVA. Otherwise if I could afford it easily enough, I would go for Michigan.
