My dream school is Northwestern, partly due to its strengths in both the humanities and sciences, but in particular due to its Integrated Science Program (ISP). My goal is to be admitted into that program, which requires ACT scores. Before I get into my score, here’s some background information:
I’ve taken AP Physics C: Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism, as well as AP Calculus BC. I’m currently taking Chemistry, Concurrent Enrollment Biology, Concurrent Enrollment Astronomy and Geology, Advanced Computer Programming and AP Statistics.
I’m the Vice President of TSA (Technology Student Association) and the president of the 3-D Modeling and Engineering Club at my school, have competed in several VEX Robotics competitions, and am a member of Math Club. I also volunteer as a math tutor and work as a math tutor as well.
My GPA is 4.0 (school’s GPA is unweighted), and, if this provides any information for selection, am Latina.
Yet, due to COVID-19, I haven’t been able to take the ACT as much as I’d like. My highest composite score is a 33. How does this score compare to other applicants of Northwestern? And particularly, is my score competitive enough for Northwestern’s ISP?
I appreciate any help and information on Northwestern, admittance, and the ISP.
You should become familiar with the Common Data Set. A vast majority of competitive schools publish a common set of data, including a section on Freshman Admission (section C). I suspect Section C.9-10 on test scores and GPA is viewed more than the test of the document combined.
Google School Name and CDS, or Common Data Set, to find them.
Last year’s data shows a 33 Composite to be at the 25th percentile of admitted/enrolled students. General advice is to apply test optional if you are below the median, or mid-point of the 25th/75th percentiles as a proxy.
Unless NW/ISP is an outlier in not allowing test optional this year, I would recommend applying test optional. The rest of your background looks strong, though NW is a stretch for just about everyone.
Because you are a URM, I lean towards submitting your ACT 33. What does your HS GC say about submitting your test score?
Both NU and ISP should be considered reaches, whether submitting your test, or applying test optional. Make sure to have a balanced list of colleges, including a handful of matches, and at least one affordable safety.
Yes, ISP requires ACT test scores. I have taken the AP Calculus BC and the AP Physics C exams (got a 5 and 4 respectively), which NU says can replace some of the SAT Subject tests, but I still need to take the Chemistry test.
One problem with my ACT score is that my math subscore is low (29). NU says they can superscore but even then my math score wouldn’t compare with my other subscores for science, reading and English.
Northwestern’s last recommended sitting for the ACT is December. Should I try and take the ACT again to get a higher math score or just submit my current one?
It’s not Composite. It’s subs. Right, the math score could be an issue. You might overcome this if your rigor and grades are tops and your GC and stem LoRs are stellar (in the right ways.)
But be aware they’re looking for both depth and breadth in ECs and courses taken. Not unilateral, all stem focus/all the time.
Yes, I also am on the leadership council for Spanish National Honors Society and GSA, am the LD Debate Captain at my school, and direct and write videos for our school’s video broadcasting team. I think I’m covered for breadth in other ECs, just worried about the math ACT score. I have one more chance to retake the test, but wondering if it’s worth it.
I am applying to some safety schools as well, but this is the one whose application I’m most worried about.
