So I'm applying to Boston College and its my 2nd choice school and I would really love to go there. I know I have the scores and the grades and stuff to go there and if it were based on that alone I wouldn't be worried at all. However, I'm afraid of what they'll think of my essay. In my essay for the Common Application, which is an extremely strong and well-written essay, I MENTION, I do not make a fuss about it or dwell on it, I merely mention for all of one sentence that I'm gay. It's really not the focus of the essay and I only mention it because it has to do with the story I'm telling. I'm aware that BC is pretty conservative, but I also know that the school has LGBT groups and that sexual orientation is included in their non-discrimination clause. I'm not worried about attending the school since the attitude on campus doesn't seem ANTI-gay, just a bit conservative. Not a big deal. I'm just worried that I won't get in because of my essay. Am I worried for nothing? What do you think? I really don't know how to write it without that part in it and wouldn't want to anyway. It is a DAMN good essay and I've already been accepted to 4 schools with it. On the other hand, I know BC is trying to become more diverse. Could my essay actually HELP me? Thoughts?

Be who you are, and if they don’t accept you because of that, then that’s not the right school for you. :)

You need to remember that it is a Catholic school. It is accepting of all beliefs, but not necessarily all actions. You must also be respectful of Catholic teachings and administration and if that will bother you, DON’T got to BC (or Georgetown, Notre Dame, Loyola, etc). You don’t have to participate, but it is there. Reread your essay with this in mind and decide if you want to submit it.

I don’t think it will be a problem if you say that’s who you are.
