Is my essay topic too weird?

I’m a huge fan of idol groups (like kpop) hahahaa…and I actually began actively translating shows/idol content for the english audience & running fanaccounts on twt. It’s honestly a pretty big part of my life because of the people I’ve met online, the cultures I’ve been exposed to, and the collaboration I’ve experienced. I’ve managed subbing teams of 40-50 people, ran an account with over 25k followers, and our subbing channel has over 1 million views now in only a couple months. I really wanted to write about this when I read essay questions asking me about “a community” or “an interest,” but wondered if I would come off as a rabid fangirl…

What schools are you applying to? If they’re extremely selective then I don’t see an essay about how you are good at social media would be something that would make you attractive to the Ivies+.

Honestly, running an account with 25k followers is pretty impressive. It could definitely make a good essay if you mention the impact you have had and you talk about the cultures and people etc that you have been exposed to.

Depending on how your spin it, it could be an interesting read. Just be sure that you tie it strongly into what you learned from the experience.

Running an account with 25k followers will not be a tip for very top colleges, maybe not relevant. An interest in kpop still needs to show the attributes the target colleges are looking for. Know what some of those are? It’s not hanging online or distant “collaboration.” Nor the number of views. When they ask about community, they usually mean more face-to-face. That’s what they look for, for their campus community. Not the potential to get distracted by online activities. Think about it.

This isn’t like a hs essay where the teacher just wants you to write on something about yourself. Now the writing will be seen by adult strangers reviewing you for their college. So, be savvy.

Lol, I like kpop, too and am far from your age. And a mom.
