So I’m going to be a senior this coming school year which means I have to start writing my college essay. One of the prompts is : " Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?"
So my question is, would I be able to write about kpop? I’m not quite sure about whether or not it is an original idea or if it would be weird in general.
What about k-pop? I personally don’t think that it would be a weird topic, people write about music in a variety of engaging ways. Just out of curiosity, are you korean?
I like Kpop, but do you understand how irrelevant it could be in a college admit review?
The worse news, imo: asking this suggests you have no idea what is relevant, what they want to learn about you. That could be a show stopper if you’re truly aimimg for an Ivy.
@applejuice007 No I’m not Korean, I’m not exactly sure what to write about kpop which is why I’ve been kind of stuck but I was thinking mostly about how it seemed like more of a challenge to me because the lyrics were in a complete different language that I’d never been exposed to before and also because of the crazy choreography that I spent countless hours watching while trying to learn. Also the whole “concept” ideas that different groups carry through and how much background there is to their concept.
well, I guess it would be interesting. the only thing is that you’ve got to consider whether this is really showing who you are as an applicant to the colleges that you’re applying to. i personally would refrain from writing about kpop, because it wouldn’t add anything of value to my application, but I’m not applying to college right now. people wrote about costco and got in and honestly it really depends on who you are as a writer. a comparison would be me writing about listening to selena gomez or something, because she speaks spanish–consider what you would think about others writing similar essays. best of luck
I’m not sure that the genre of music you like tells the reader what kind of person you are.
The point behind this essay is to leave the reader wanting to meet you. It should separate you from your statistics and give some insight into your personality-- as opposed to your preferences.
