Hi everyone!
I have recently submitted my app to UCB and UCLA and was wondering if my GPA was too low to have a realistic chance at admission.
Also I am applying as a philosophy major to both schools and am OOS.
My stats are:
UC GPA (C+W) - 3.94
UC GPA (UW) - 3.69
ACT - 35 C (35M, 35S, 36R, 35E, 10W)
SAT 2 - 800 Math 2
AP - Stat (5), US History (4), World History (4), Physics 1 (3)
Taking an additional 7 AP’s my senior year
I don’t want to include my EC’s for privacy reasons, but they are very good in both depth and breadth and I highlight that in my essays.
Thank you!
Also if this helps, 4/5 B’s occurred during my sophomore year, so I have a strong upward trend.
Historical UC GPA for Freshman Admit rate:
UC GPA range: 3.80-4.19
UCB: 12%
UCLA: 14%
You have excellent test scores and if your EC’s and essays are just as outstanding, you may have a chance at UCB and UCLA.
Can you afford the OOS rate?
@“aunt bea” Money is not an issue, my main concern is being admitted.
@Gumbymom Thanks for the stats! From that 12% rate, are most that accepted athletes or hooked applicants, or are they regular students?
The type of applicants are not broken out for the GPA range. This is Historical GPA data indicating the higher the GPA, the better. Also as an OOS applicant, the admitted GPA averages are slightly higher than for in-state applicants.
This is from the common dataset for UCLA using UW UC GPA and enrolled applicants:
Percent who had GPA of 3.75 and higher: 94.6 %
Percent who had GPA between 3.50 and 3.7: 3.1 %
Percent who had GPA between 3.25 and 3.49: 1.3 %
Percent who had GPA between 3.00 and 3.24: 0.6 %
Percent who had GPA between 2.50 and 2.99: 0.3 %
Totals should = 100% 100.0 %
You can also check the UCB common dataset for the same information.
@Gumbymom I think UCLA might be using the weighted GPA because UCB’s CDS shows that 85% had a GPA of 3.75 or higher. Seems more in line with the original data you posted.
@CheekyNandos, you are correct since it does not state that the ranges are out of 4.0 scale while UCB’s CDS does state on a 4.0 scale. Great catch.
