Is My PSAT Score Bad For A Ninth Grader?

I am a ninth grader, currently taking Algebra I, English Regents, and has not taken the one semester writing course required for ninth graders. Is my PSAT score bad?

OMG, I hate these kinds of posts.

Chill out! It’s too early for you to worry about SATs. 152 isn’t that bad. My sophomore year PSAT was 166… but I got 2240 on my SAT taken in October my senior year…

FAIL!!! Im a freshmen and i got a 219. Im a boss

don’t worry abt your scores now… you’ll improve over the years! you have time.

I got a 169 as a freshman lmao.
2220 SAT junior year.

I got about the same score as a freshman, ended with a 2280. I didn’t even mention my psat or anything to the colleges I applied to-- don’t worry about them! Just keep trying in school

I scored a 153 as a freshman (haha :P) and then in sophomore year i scored a 189 without doing anything (no studying or special books just following the schools curriculem). You should be fine depending on how smart you are. I studied a lot and then i brought my PSAT above 220 by october of junior year so if you study you should be fine.

@SamirBabai:

Did you take all honors or APs? I take nearly all normal classes, so it might affect me more.

152 (equivalent to 1520 SAT) is about average for a high school senior, or a little above average for a freshman.

Your scores will go up naturally as you get older, especially since you don’t seem to have taken a lot of the classes that will teach you the skills that you need for this test. Math, particularly–someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the PSAT goes up to Geometry-level with /maybe/ a little Al II sprinkled in there.

If you study it is entirely possible to raise your score by a lot, even to NMSF-level. (For New York, that would be around 218.)

I started high, but I was excellently prepared.

@haavain:

That’s entirely correct. I haven’t taken Geometry or Algebra II, yet.

Why do you guys waste your time on taking this crap as a freshman?

There is no way in heck it will help with anything. Wait a year, and then go full boar on testing until the end of your junior year. After that, pick your favorite test and take it once more as a senior, then stop.

There’s an Ask the Dean topic about this floating around somewhere–search for it.

But your scores will naturally go up between now and junior year. Unless you don’t see a significant improvement next year, there’s no need to freak out about the PSAT. It’s only purpose, really, is for National Merit, which is an impressive accomplishment, to be sure, but nothing to study for in the midst of a busy school year. And keep in mind that the correlation between PSAT and SAT scores isn’t direct. Although, according to College Board, the PSAT tests less advanced material, from my personal experience and the experience of my friends, SAT scores are generally higher than PSAT scores.

My advice: Get off of these boards until you have the only PSAT score that matters: that from junior year.

well in freshman year i was in algebra 2 and honors english and increased my score 36 points then sophmore yaer honors english and pre-calc which was somewhat useful.

freshman. all pre-ap.
math 70
writing 56
reading 57

Your PSAT score is average.

Your English is terrible though.

PSAT is ok…keep up the work and you will improve :)

Im taking Geometry, All Pre-AP/IB classes, and got 70, 56, 57. I did bad, but im averaging 60s now in reading and writing. so… overall composite of 190 or so?

I’m a freshman, too!!

My math is pretty pathetic considering I’m in Calc BC. I just suck at standardized testing…

well theres your problem! you havent even had algebra 2 yet!!!

take algebra2, geometry, complete english 1, and then take it again and post back
