Im a freshman at the university of florida. For spring my schedule is currently
ECO2023 - Principles of macroeconomics (online)
MAC 2311 - Calculus 1 (online)
AMH2020 - United states since 1877
AEC3030C - Effective oral communication
BSC2010 & Lab - Biology 1
Total credits: 18
Does this course load appear to heavy? I’m not quite sure and would love some advice. Thank you!
definitely would not recommend taking calc online, unless you are really really strong in the math department, and even then I still wouldn’t. if you have to go past calc 1, you’re probably gonna be pretty shaky with calc 1 knowledge. as for the rest of your schedule, it really depends on you. you go to uf, so i’m assuming that you had hard schedules in high school, meaning you can probably handle it. it’s really all up to you, though. as long as you’re willing to put schoolwork before social life, go to office hours, and don’t waste time partying, etc, you’ll probably be fine. but it really just depends on what you’re used to. what did you do first semester?
I think that the above is 17 credit hours and not 18.
This is not much above the standard 15 and is due to ECO and MAC being 4 rather than 3 credit hours.
How did you do in the fall? If you earned a 4.0 with a strong course load then this would appear reasonable … if you earned a 2.0 with a light load then this would appear unreasonable.
ECO, MAC, and BSC are all tough/meaty classes. Do not fall behind, in any of these classes. Be prepared for every class and make sure you spend the time needed to fully understand it.
For classes in 4) above, I strongly suggest you get Study Edge. It is worth every penny.
thanks for your advice! After talking with some other students, I decided to drop one aec in order to focus on the tougher courses. I took mac in the fall, but had to withdraw after not performing well, other than that I did well in my other classes. I heard study edge was essential so I will definitely be doing that. I figured it would be better to drop a course so I don’t overload myself. Thank you!
I took calc in person in the fall and unfortunately had to withdraw. I took ap calc in high school, but did not pass the exam so i couldn’t get credit. Calc has been the only class I’ve struggled with so online is really the only other route. I’ve heard good things in particular about the instructor teaching the course so hopefully it works out. thank you!
Just asking as I’m not familiar - why is Study Edge essential? From what I can tell it’s a tutor system. Why couldn’t you get the same benefit from visiting with the Professor during office hours, seeing TAs regularly to stay on track, etc?
Seems to me students are using Study Edge instead of the resources they are already paying for as UF students. Is their a problem with just going to classes and learning from the professors / built in reosurces already mentioned?
@rickle1 Students find it’s far easier to do Study Edge. Office hours with the professor can be hit and miss, the same with the TA’s.
The presenters are good, and it’s online. They also have live presentations, and the packets they hand out are useful. It’s also in a good location, next to campus (across from the library).
If you’re having trouble with Calculus, I would highly recommend it. Especially for freshmen.
