Is Northeastern Safe?

Is Northeastern in a safe environment? I know parts are in Roxbury but from what I’ve heard it is not in bad parts of Roxbury. Please let me know.

The Northeastern Campus is very safe. If you check the college’s crime log you will see the most frequent crimes are bicycle theft and having other valuable items which are left in public places on campus stolen (phone, laptop, etc.) Like most campuses they have a blue light system where you can contact campus police from different locations on campus. They have a legit campus police department (not just security guards.) If you need a ride back to campus or to an off-campus apartment at any hour you can call them for a safe ride (within a certain distance). You can also call to get escorted back to your dorm from any location on campus (if you are working late in the library or architecture studio)
That being said you are in a city, so you should be street smart. There are unsafe areas close to campus - you shouldn’t walk through the fens alone at night, for example. There have also been occasions when stuff has happened close to campus - usually related to drug or gang violence. Again, part of being in a major city.

Good answer above - Boston is generally a very safe city, lots of people out at all times of night because of all the college students.

While not ideal, even this is overplayed. I probably do this monthly at least without incident, though I am male.

I would agree, largely very safe, just be street smart and aware of surroundings. I’ve seen anecdotes in those Princeton Review Top 38130491 Colleges books from tiny liberal arts schools in the middle of nowhere like “You can leave your laptop, wallet, and car keys on the table in the student center while you grab lunch door and nobody takes it because of our honor code!”… which is not the case at Northeastern. We are really smack in the middle of Boston and as a result non-students are in and around campus constantly. Just some basic precautions like taking your stuff with you to the bathroom if you’re in a public library or something, using the buddy system later at night, etc. should keep you totally set.

After attending the Safety presentation at my son’s orientation, I feel confident that with some reasonable street smarts, Northeastern is a very safe university. As others have said, the large majority of crime on campus is due to students leaving personal items out in the open while they nap, use the restroom, or go get food. Honestly, the most dangerous thing on campus is the kids crossing the T tracks on Huntington Ave. I don’t know how kids are not getting hit by trains!!! Especially if they are impaired at all. :open_mouth:

Generally, any place in the world is safe until someone decides to make it unsafe.

No mater where you are-- from Disney World to a sedate college campus in the middle of nowhere to Times Square at 2 am, you should take normal precautions. Be aware of your surroundings. Be smart when it comes to parties and partying. Look out for your friends, and have friends who will look out for you.
