Is Ohio State worth OOS tuition?

I am in-state for Indiana and interested in business. I know Kelley School of Business is a good school…but, I am wondering if I should apply to Ohio State bc of the better overall academics?

Will you be able to receive the Natiobal Buckeye Schokarship?

I’m in the exact same position. I applied to both, as I’m not sure business is the place for me and OSU pretty much beats IU in everything but business academically.

No public school is worth out-of-state tuition. It is an unfathomable amount of debt. Even if you snag a $40,000 starting salary first thing after graduation, imagine how many years it will take to pay off a $120,000+ debt. I stayed in state, received a full-tuition scholarship, and graduated with zero debt, so I’ve been able to start saving fresh out of college, and it feels great.

Yes, Ohio State is awesome and offers ample opportunities, but the reputation of IU versus OSU won’t make a difference in your long-term career, and you can create a quality education from either school. The peripheral classes, like chemistry and English, don’t matter as much as your field of choice, so go with the school that has a stronger or more appealing program for your field. Even if you decide to change your major, whatever leg up OSU has is not going to be worth the crippling debt you’ll have to shoulder. That being said, you should apply for OSU Early Action anyway to see what kind of scholarships you receive. Best of luck with your applications!

@blackcanyon - Great advice (not being sarcastic). The cost versus benefit comparison is so very true.

I don’t think it is worth the cost difference. It might be easier to make the argument that an Ohio student might be able to justify IU than and Indiana student justifying OSU. I would give the same advice to each, if you can’t afford it then stay instate. That shouldn’t stop you from applying however. You may get scholarships to OSU that will make the costs more comparable. The question then would become which school do you prefer. You have good choices in both IU Kelley and Purdue’s Krannert school of business. Another to consider is Miami University’s Farmer School of Business.

I don’t think OSU is better than IU academically. Maybe at the grad level (outside of Kelley MBA and some yumaniyies probably) OSU is better overall, but i think IU is OSU’s equal, at least, for undergrad. Both are better than the other at some things. IU is generally recognized as being better at Business. Keep in mind that USNews grad school rankings are for… grad and PhD programs.

OSU is better in most STEM programs probably, but if you were a STEM person, Purdue is more than adequate. Indiana students have outstanding in-state options for whatever interests them.

So, no, unless OSU offers something that IU doesn’t, I do not think OSU is worthy of all the extra money. And if you’re interested in Business, IU is stronger anyway.

How is Ball State?

I have to concur that out of state for undergrad business is not worth it. Save your money for some sort specialization later on in your career.

Best of luck!

OSU is much better academically and overall.

The money you save by going in-state can pay for a Masters. Consider a 4+1 program.

I think Kelley is the better program, so no.

PS I hope out of Kelley you can do better than $40k a year.

@sel7sel If you’re going for business, I’d say pick Kelley. It’s better than OSU by a little bit, and you’re in-state. Unless you get the National Buckeye Scholarship + Maximus, Trustee, or Provost, I would say really look to stay in-state, keep undergraduate fees a little lower.

I must agree with others that the extra cost of being out of state is just not worth it. Save your money and use that towards a Master’s degree.

If IU was a bad school that would be one thing, but you will get a similar education at both Universities.

The only downside of course is if you are a football fan. Well if so maybe it’s time to give that up, and start watching more basketball.

I like Columbus, but Bloomington is a very nice college town.

Piling on here, but choose either IU Kelley or even consider Purdue Krannert.

Without any scholarship assistance, tOSU will cost around $44k per year. Kelley will cost around $26k and Krannert will cost around $24k. Over 4 years, you will save around $80k in tuition by staying in-state.

That is $80k you could apply to an MBA - or consider yourself $80k ahead.
