a year of high school foreign language?

General rule for modern languages:
-One year of HS language means you start from scratch here
-Two years of HS language means you start from scratch here
-Three years of HS language means you start with the second semester (e.g. 3 yrs of HS French means you take French 2 here)
-Four years of HS language means you start with the third semester (e.g. 4 yrs of HS French means you take French 3 here)
-Five years of HS language means your start with the third or fourth semester (e.g. 5 yrs of HS French means you take French 3 or 4 here)

You are allowed to enroll for one level less advanced if you want to (e.g. you qualify for the level 3 but you opt to take level 2 anyways; if you take 1 your instructor may ask you to drop).

I thought that if you take at least 3 years of the same language in high school and get Cs or above, you fulfill your foreign language requirement.

your need a C- on the second semester of a level 3 language in HS to meet the FL requirement

The alternative is to complete the second semester of any language here at Cal (i.e. basically any language numbered #B or 2)

So, since I took Spanish for 3 years, I can opt to start from scratch right? Because I need 4 semesters of a foreign language for my major, and I had all new teachers who never finished the course material all throughout high school (yeah, my luck is a *****).

abbccc, I think fiesta is asking for a major requirement, not just the university one.

Sorry for hijacking but I have an additional question too…
I took 1 year of high school Chinese. But I also took 3 summer semesters of Chinese at a Community College. What would that count as? I know it seems simple but I like clarification.

If it is a UC transferable course at CC, then yes it would count.

You can take Spanish 2 in fall (I advise you to look at the Spanish department website to confirm this). I am not sure what your major’s position on skipping semesters for language is, yoy should talk to them.

That is a good question, East Asian Languages and Cultures has a placement test online.

Nah, I just wanna start from scratch then. Off to Spanish 001 then.
