Foreign Language Berkeley Question

Exactly, how many foreign language courses do we need to transfer to Berkeley. I took 2 years of the same foreign language. Is that enough?

I believe 3 years in high school or 2 semesters at your CC.

University of California Berkeley, Haas School of Business

Not even two semesters but Second-semester level course.

Are you guys serious? I only took 2.5 years of french in HS. I thought that if you finish the igetc (2 years of same lang.) then you're done...??

agree with UCBlove.
i haven't heard anything about berkeley requiring two college courses in foreign language, or one second-semester level college course (spanish 2).
for IGETC, if you complete one semester of a foreign language (spanish 1, chinese 1, italian 1, etc) you satisfy the requirement.

rissiky, i have, however, heard that the business school wants two semesters, though i'm not 100% sure.

on myBerkeleyApp, under IGETC breadth requirements:

Language other than English (LOTE) -- 2 yrs of the same language in high school w/grades of C or better; OR COLLEGE-LEVEL COURSE(S)(check assist.org for your school); or AP language exam scores of 3, 4, or 5; or IB (higher level) language exam score of 5, 6, or 7.

the parentheses suggest that one college-level course would be fine, and i'm absolutely sure that the first level courses (spanish 1, french 1, etc) satisfy that requirement. since they aren't asking for anything further than this, it's reasonable to assume that they're content with the IGETC as is (again, unless you're applying to some specific program that does require something more).

completion of igetc waves the 3rd year of a foreign language

thank god haha

From assist.org articulation for UCB Business Administration:

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

You may satisfy this requirement by:

Receiving a grade of C- or higher in high school courses comparable to the
third year level of any language other than the language of high school
instruction.

(this is where the confusion is I guess)

-For many students who attended high school outside of the United States, and
English is not the language of instruction, then English is your foreign
language. For example, if you went to high school in China where the language
of instruction was Mandarin and took the 3rd level of English, then English is
considered your foreign language.

Passing a college course comparable to the second semester of a foreign
language as taught at Berkeley.

(this is where I got the second semester-level from)

Achieving a score of 590 on the SAT II Foreign Language Subject Exam.

Achieving a score of 3 or better on any AP Exam in a language other than
English.

Obtaining a grade of C or better on the General Certificate "A" or "O" Level
Foreign Language Exam.

Why do you guys keep bringing up IGETC? For Haas at least...

"All of the required courses must be completed by the end of the spring term
prior to starting at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. IGETC does not
satisfy these requirements."

why do you keep bringing up Haas?
the post posed a general question.

well the OP never stated so you cant answer with a general answer if there are specific majors with different requirements.

off topic: anyone up for some left4dead(PC) ?

ok I looked it up...
For UCBLove's major ( Anthropology ) he has to meet the requirements of the College of Letters and Science which is pasted below:

Degree Requirement-Foreign Language Requirement

Actually the page prior to that link says:

Note for transfer students: These requirements may be met by Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or UC Reciprocity. Link:

Degree Requirement-L&S Requirements

So to me that sums it up. I wouldn't worry about it if I where you.
