I'm an incoming freshman (sorta) and I start Moorpark College tomorrow. I'm taking Elementary Algebra and a bunch of other courses. And next semester, I'm taking Intermediate Algebra and Stats concurrently. Do you think its a good idea to take my prerequisites for math pass/no pass? What are the cons of doing that? I don't plan on taking any more courses that way if I don't have to.

By the way, I'm planning on applying to UCB, UCLA, UCSB, and UCSC, and I plan on being a Linguistics major. Thank you! :)

For non-transferrable classes (like the Algebra classes you mention) it might not be a bad idea, particularly if you’re weak in math. Just make sure you pass. I’d take all UC-transferrable classes (including Stats) for a letter grade.

Yeah pass/no pass is ok for those remedial courses, so you can do quality work and learn without having to stress out and worry about B’s and C’s. That being said, taking a course that way tends to make some people lazy and not as driven in the class as they should be. As far as it affecting your chances for those schools, P/NP is fine for any remedial class you want to take, as well as one and maybe two transferrable classes so as long as your GPA is high. Just be aware of how many classes your CC will allow you to take that way.

Technically, if they aren’t even UC transferable those B’s and C’s won’t affect the OP anyways. It doesn’t matter, personally I would take them for a letter grade because I think it motivates you to work harder. With Pass or No pass, it’s kinda like w/e…

I always thought that UC looks at all classes but doesn’t transfer the units or the grades for remedial classes. I’m still so lost on how they calculate GPA and that stuff.

OK, the GPA they look at for admission is just with the grades from UC transferrable courses, thats it. P/NP is just so you don’t have to look at unattractive low grades in case u mess up in lower level classes. Hope that clears this matter up for you.

Officially they can’t consider non-transferrable grades, but they still seen them.

If you’re going to get an A in Intermediate Algebra, take the class for a grade. If you’re going to get a C, take it P/NP.

I took Intermediate Algebra for a letter grade. I want to have an uninterrupted chain of A grades on my transcript. Hopefully it will have a positive psychological effect on the adcom. I’m up to 14 consecutive A’s so far.
