The question is above

NO!!!!!

For the love of Ra, write in pencil. I mistakenly wrote in pen, and I now I have to wait for the CB to (graciously without a fee) hand grade my essay. I will not receive my SAT score until May... after I've taken the May SAT. For all I know, I might have to wait until after I receive the May SAT scores.

Write in PENCIL.

thankyou very much i guess i will write in pencil

I read a post at college_help at LiveJournal.com: someone wrote in pen and received a zero for his/her essay. So you might not be as lucky as pureiridescence.

pureiridescence, you got a zero initially, too, right? (didn't we chat about this in another thread?)

What's CB's reasoning for this?

It's not like a computer can read and grade an essay. Is it because they scan it into a computer first and read it on the computer instead of on the paper?

DIMA

yes it is. apparently they cant scan pen

Phaedrus, yes, we did talk about this in a previous post. I did receive a zero (and lost over 120 points for my overall W score), but a few days ago I received a letter from the CB stating the issue and that they were going to regrade it. It sickens me that they stated they were not going to charge me the $50 hand grading fee. It was their mistake, not mine. It also said that they were looking for a way to make sure students know to write the essay in pencil.

Hmm... how about writing it in BOLD letters on the prompt and the essay answer sheet, along with making the test proctors read it. shakes head

CB said that their scanners only read pencil (like a scantron would), so when the essays were scanned and uploaded, they appeared to be blank. The essay graders award blank essays a zero, so those who wrote in pen received a zero because their essays did appear to be blank after it was scanned and uploaded.

Yeah same thing happened to me. The letter said it would probably be after the first week of May for them to finish grading it.

This sucks

I still don't understand why you would write in pen and not pencil. The entire test is written in pencil, why would it be different for the essay?

Don't you write AP test essays in pen?

You would write in pen because pen is much easier to read.

With the exception of mutliple choice bubble in tests (SCANTRON and the like), I have not used pencil in non-math classes since fifth grade, pen is just so much easier to write with and read.
