Is UP harder to get into this year compared to last?

its a most likely yes

I don’t see why it would be any harder. I think they got over 90,000 applications or something last year, which was a new record. That number could be wrong, but i do know that they had more applicants last year than ever before. Part of that was due to the fact that the high school graduating class of 2009 was the largest ever. So I see no reason why it would be harder this year…

If you get in, no. If you don’t, yes.

The number of applications is only one part of the equation. The size of the incoming class has fluctuated greatly in recent years. In 2007 there were about 6,481 new freshman on campus; the freshman class 2006 was about 25% larger at 8025. In 2008 the class was about 7350. Without knowing what the enrollment target is there is no way to know if a greater number of applications will mean a significantly lower percentage of acceptances.

The fall 2009 class was 7441. Not a record, but still pretty high. According to the university, they received 52715 applications. I think the number of HS grads in Pennsylvania is at its peak, and will start to decline in coming years. Like many institutions, they will probably step up their out of state recruiting.

So the last two years have been fairly stable and nearly equal to the four year average. I would expect a slightly higher number of admittances this year as most of the bloated freshman class from fall 2006 should graduate in May and the school needs to keep enrollment numbers up to balance the budget.
