I've heard from a few students that it is stuffy and rather pre-professional. I've already applied (obviously) and now I'm wondering if that decision was wise.
P.S. I am not the craziest of partiers, but I do like to kick back and I am going to college for an enjoyable experience, not just the academics.

penn is known as the "party ivy"
study hard, party harder -- our motto.

being pre-professional doesn't mean it's not fun!

Most people at Penn are pretty uptight relative to people at other Ivies, except maybe those at Columbia. Wharton kids are way too serious imo; places like Brown, Wesleyan, Cornell, and even Harvard are considerably more laid back from what I've noticed.

Fortunately there are a good 6000+ kids in the liberal arts school at Penn who are quite fun. And who says the Wharton kids aren't fun outside of their boring classes?

For what I've heard from friends at Penn there's enough people here that if you want to party hard every weekend, you can do that. If you want to watch movies with friends on a friday, you can do that too.

Oh, and to those who take Chad10's comment too seriously, he has started threads in the past making fun of Penn's name relation with Penn State. He doesn't go to Penn, and for some reason starts threads and posts on a lot of Penn threads to make fun of it... Penn is far more laid back than Harvard. It is an Ivy, and there are people that take themselves too seriously, but as a whole, it isn't quite as intense.

yea i know i just criticized him on the yale forum

^
Penn is a very fun school from my experience.

oh Chad10, you're funny.

I think Penn used to be a lot more like what you've described. My uncle graduated from penn in '90, and he said that all anybody did was study. He had such a bad experience that he told me I would be better off going to UMich where you can get a good education, and not have to be around total squares. I think his viewpoint is DEFINITELY outdated, though. The current students that go there from my HS were all partied a lot. Also, when I visited, many of the people I met (Even Whartonites!) seemed to party a lot as well.

As someone else pointed out, there are simply too many students for it to be a problem finding other people to do anything on a given night.

Lots of parties but for some reason I didn't feel like the people were as chill as at some of the other Ivies (Brown, Dartmouth). Lots more NYC types.

Uh, do you go to Penn? I myself go to W and I'll admit I'm boring right now (esp with interview season in full swing). The stereotype is that W kids are tools and are unable to discuss anything outside of finance. Let's face it, 90% of all W kids are bloody lame (I tend to play double dutch with that 90/10 line depending on the time of year and where we are on the economic cycle).

I don't know if I'd say 90... I'd put it at like 65 maybe?

But seriously, ever school has cool and lame kids. The lame ones in Wharton are just extra annoying.

Penn? "Too serious and not fun"?? No no no, every day is a fun filled adventure, let me tell you.

Every day, after my accounting and actuarial science classes, I head over to my great buddy Norm's apartment and we have a little competition to see who can complete the New York Times crossword the fastest. Sometimes it gets real fierce, too. Of course, Norm hasn't beat me in weeks, but he keeps trying! What a trooper! Then I go home and cook up a great big bowl of steamed vegetables and cozy up in the ol' sofa and watch CSpan. Bliss.

But the weekend is when the real fun starts. And let me tell you, these Penn kids can get pretty wild. Once I went to a frat party (Rush week, pretended I was a freshman and cared about their brotherhood or whatever), and we played TWISTER! That's right, and even girls from a nearby sorority joined in! It was the most exciting night of my life. Some party poopers wanted alcohol, though, and they were freshman! The nerve! These guys have a lot to learn... everyone knows you can't drink alcohol until you're 21, and that only degenerates and lamers drink to make up for their boring and flawed personalities. Not becoming of Ivy League students at all, no sir. Fortunately Penn is mostly a dry campus, and all the students know how to have fun responsibly. UNO anyone?? :)

Oh, and if you want to have a real good time and make fantastic and exciting new friends, me and the Board Game Club host a Monopoly party every Wednesday in Houston Hall. We have all the varieties of Monopoly (yes, even the Star Wars the Original Trilogy version!). It's probably the most popular club activity on campus, and you'll meet students/faculty of all personalities. Maybe even end up with a hot date :-*

^^ haha!!!!!!!!!!!

I could never get a hot date. The best I could get was a Facebook poke.
