I recently got invited to join this program. My CC wants $185 dollars to join! Is it worth it? I plan on transferring in fall 2015 and will be applying to schools this semester. If i join, i wont have time to participate in it since I have school and work. I dont have many xtracurricular activities. I am part of the TAP/Honors program, I work as a chemistry tutor for my CC, and I work in the chemistry stock room at another CC, and I will be volunteering in my CCs biology department ( a requirement for my honors Bio 6 class ). Is that enough? I would like to transfer to UCLA or UC Davis as a biology major and currently have a 3.69 UC transferable GPA. It would seem the only reason to join would be so i could put it on my application but I dont know if it would hold much weight if I just paid to be in the program and didnt really participate in it. Does it make sense to join it and spend $185 to be in the program for less than one year? Will it be a lot harder to get into those universities without it? My parents said they are willing to pay $85 if I want to join but $100 is still a lot for me, its basically my food money for about 1.5 - 2 weeks. Any insight on this would be very helpful, as I dont want to pass up an opportunity to drastically increase my chances of getting into a good college to avoid a couple weeks of hardship ( after all, ive already endured a couple years of hard work to get to where i am now.)

It would be a good investment. You don’t have to participate, and you can still have access to the scholarship application. It helps you apply to a ton of scholarships for transfers only.

You’ll be a member of it for life. Phi Theta Kappa membership carries through beyond community college.

I’m a PTK member. I’m not really an active member though. I attend the meetings a few times each semester, but I don’t get actively involved in it. I joined basically for the purpose of putting it on my transfer applications. Being in an honors society looks good. I’m also a member of the Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honors society.

I’d say it’s worth it. If nothing else, it gives you access to a lot of scholarships that you would not otherwise have access to. They also put you on a lot of college mailing lists so you get emails from different recruiters at schools and such. A lot of the emails are basically fluff mail from Podunk U in the middle of nowhere, but I’ve gotten mail/email from schools like Penn and Columbia as well, and I’m considering applying to them.

Thank you for actually replying. I think I will join, for the scholarships and to be able to put it on my transfer application if not for anything else. I just had one more question if you dont mind answering. I realize that phi kappa theta is the community college version of the honor society, if I get into the 4 year college version of this honor society, would I have to pay dues again? Or would my dues carry over? I actually emailed the coordinator for this program in my school this question, but I did not get a respond.

Phi Theta Kappa is an honors society for community college students, but it isn’t really a “community college version” of a different honors society. It is a distinct honors society all its own. It’s actually the largest honors society in the world as I recall.

There are numerous other honors societies. PTK may have ties with other ones, but I don’t think those ties go to the extent that PTK is “part of” another one. If you join another honors society, odds are that you’ll have to pay separate dues for it as well.

It’s also worth pointing out that a lot of 4 year universities have automatic transfer scholarships for Phi Theta Kappa students.

Thank you for answering! I learned a lot from your responses. Im definitely going to join now. I hope I get some scholarships from it atleast lol. Although if you can just answer one more thing, how much was your dues? For me it is $185, while online I see people saying that they only had to pay 60 - 80 dollars. Im assuming it may be because the chapter in my school is more active, but im not sure how active they are yet. Thanks again for answering.

As I recall, my dues were $75. It’s been a little over a year now though, so I may be remembering wrong.
