So I really like Drexel, but I haven't been able to take a campus visit as of yet (but I'm going for the Accepted Student's Day April 9th thing). Only thing is that my parents have been a little worried about Philly being a "crime-filled" city and just generally worried about how safe it is. I know every city has its own problems but what do you guys think? I mean, I live in Mass so I actually go around Boston a lot sometimes late at night, so I'm not that worried about it myself. How is Philly compared to other cities?

Sorry that this isn’t an answer to your question at all but I’m also from MA and did you get an invite in the mail for Accepted Student’s Day?
An email?
Or do they assume you plan on going?
(Also, I’ve heard that Philly’s police isn’t the best…)

Don’t worry it’s all good, I got a letter in the mail about Accepted Student’s Day. There was already one on March 7th but the next (and I think last) one is this Saturday, April 10th, from 10 AM - 4 PM.

this question has been asked many times on this board and i’ve answered it many times. however instead of answering again, i think a better way to satisfy your parents is when you visit campus, start polling random students on the street and ask them how safe they feel. i’m sure you’ll get your best answer from them.

Erg. So I’m guessing I have to wait and see four days if I get an invitation?
I really want to go… but it’s this week and I just recently got accepted…

If you are an accepted student then you can probably still register for accepted students days. It’s Saturday or Sunday depending on your major.

“During March and April, special events are held exclusively for students who have been accepted to the University for fall 2010. For more information about these events, please call 1-800-2-DREXEL.”

^From the website

I’ll be helping out Saturday for those of you coming then. :)

I live about 10 minutes out of Philadelphia and visit it very often.

The most I can say about campus security (I’ve been around the campus a lot and was recently accepted) is that I feel quite safe there. There are a lot of those campus security phone booths and the campus itself is in a generally good area. You probably won’t want to be walking around the streets alone late at night, but that can be said about most big cities.

On the other hand, there are several parts of Philadelphia that could be considered unsafe. The area just blocks from Drexel and UPenn isn’t the best neighborhood. If there is one place you want to watch out for, I think it would be North Philadelphia (up around Temple’s campus). That area is notorious for robberies and other crimes.

My best advice about the city would come down to this: Just stay aware of your surroundings and know where and where not to go. This is pretty much true with any large city.

If you want more details, just ask. I’ll be here!
