My guidance counselor keeps telling me it's not, but he knows very little about this stuff? What do you think?

I would say it is- but depends on how often you do it and how involved you are. As in, are you part of a photography clubs and submit photos to magazines, competitions etc, or do you do it as just a past time (because then it's more of a hobby)

I don't think you need to be part of a club or competition for an EC to "matter". If it is something you enjoy doing frequently (or all sumer) and it has shaped your life or satisfied something inside you, for me it is an ec.

Well, you're not a college admissions officer, are you now?

Typically, ECs entail community involvement if they're to have any meaningful weight.

ignore coolblue, he doesn't have any idea what hes talking about. Yes Photography is a EC is you pursue it passionately.

i'd say it is.

if devote a a significant amount of time to it then yes.

Yes, of course it is. It helps if you've shown your work somewhere, or had a photo published, or won an award, but it's still an EC, even without any of those nice extras. Still, it might not be too late -- can you take photographs for a local or school event or publication?

Some colleges accept extra supplemental materials. You could put together one or two 8 1/2 by 11 pages with photos on them.

yeah, basically anything you put a lot of time into outside of school is an EC

Yes, it can even be your largest EC. Two brothers from my schools (extraordinary students) both were the photography editors of the paper. Each took pictures for nonfiction books, magazines, and had their work published in major magazines. They sent in their photography with their apps. (Obviously they had other stuff, but photography was their major commitment.)

Princeton and Harvard. Amazing kids.

Thanks for the input!

I'm a yearbook photographer and have taken multiple classes, so I do have some community involvement through photography. Should I list yearbook and photography separately or together on my app?

I am a photographer myself and as such I would say "definitely yes!" photography can be an EC.

Since you actually take pics for the yearbook I assume that you are not just taking snapshots. You must have some skills. In addition to taking shots you probably spend hours on post processing.

I would put together a portfolio of your best work and submit that together with a link to an online gallery (assuming you have one, if not: get one!).

Absolutely yes. Your GC is a botard.

Should I list yearbook photographer/photography together, or should I list them as two different extracurriculars?
