Does it better or worsen your chance in getting into Law School?

As a general rule, law schools really don’t care what your major is as long as you have a high GPA and do well on the LSATs. That said, Sociology has obvious relevance to law. And many top law schools, including Stanford and University of Virginia, offer joint JD and Sociology graduate degrees, so they obviously equate it.

However, make sure you go to a school with a rigorous sociology program. At many universities it’s more of a “lazy” major than, for example, Philosophy, resulting in low LSAT scores for most Sociology majors. But this is just a generalization.

Also, the most important thing to remember is that your major should excite you. Because, again, law school doesn’t care, so why study something you don’t enjoy? If you enjoy Sociology, by all means major in Sociology.

I don’t think any particular sociology program is known for its rigor.

Princeton is actually.

UChicago is the font of all that is known in Sociology! :)

At the undergrad level, all UChicago does is activate your depression gene and push you to work your ass off. It doesn’t make you any smarter.

Sounds like “rigor” to me!

UChicago has major kudos in the US doesnt it?

Funny here, most common folk wouldnt regard it as one of the big US schools. Those of us in the know know how awesome its rep is, but it doesnt have that international tag of say UCLA [exc. HYPM which have rep even on Mars]

UChicago doesn’t have a “public name” anywhere in the world, except for Asia (in which it is quite prestigious). No, not even in the US. No, not even in the Midwest. No, not even in Chicago. On the other hand, the people “in the know” (i.e., the top 10% most educated) of course have tremendous respect for it.

I am a sociology major (from OSU) and I definitely feel that it didn’t challenge me or make me any smarter by any stretch of the imagination! “Lazy major” - YES! I would not recommend it for law school!

Your point???

the University of Chicago has a superb reputation in South America…may I remind you some of you about the Chicago Boys…

Most “common folk” would not recognize ~5 of the Ivies, either.

Just strange to me that a List A* school has the PR of a C class school.

Doesnt compute.
