I've decided that Stern is the place that fits me. However, one thing is holding me back- the social nature of Stern. I currently attend a high school that is very cliquey (I am also part of a "clique"), and I don't like it. I like to think that I am gregarious, but my sexual orientation has caused problems for me in the past. Although every school has cliques to a certain extent, it seems as if many members of CC are saying that Stern is very cliquey. Is this statement really true?

Also, I know NYU is gay friendly, but how gay friendly is Stern? Any Gay Sternies that could tell me their experiences?

Stern is a small community of its own but I have yet to experience any cliques in it (I’m a freshman.) To be honest, while you have your cohort and all, your friends are still really just coming out if your dorms and extracurriculars.

And as for homophobia (I’m not gay myself) but there are definitely a decent amount of homosexuals at Stern. Don’t forget, you’re still at NYU and in NYC!

Most of everyone’s friends here are in the same dorm. Within this dorm friend circle, the ethnicities tend to be very homogeneous. Asians in Hayden hang out with other Asians in Hayden, whites in 3rd north hang out with other whites in 3rd north, regardless of what school they go to. Nobody discriminates against other races, it’s just that that’s the way the cookie crumbles. I’m at CAS with huge classes so nobody makes friends in class.

Eh, while people do hang out with their own race, it all depends on you. If you choose to hang out with people outside of your own race, then this won’t happen lol

College in general is “clique-y”. You have a group of friends, and you hang out with them. You don’t become friends with everyone, especially in a big school like Stern or NYU in general. You can be friendly with everyone, but you’re not going to best friends with every single person you meet.
