I’m taking 17…and that’s only because I have to. I would take less (around 15) if I could.

I have 19 but 5 are from a remedial english class so its really like 14. I have 20 already thanks to ap

At my school, 15 credits per semester is the norm (120 credits are required to graduate, so 8 semesters x 15 credits). Taking 18 is pretty much academic suicide (especially since it’s an engineering school).

With that being said, most of the classes at my school are also worth 3 credits, as opposed to 4 like some people here are describing, so 15 credits is pretty much equivalent to 5 classes.

If you think you can handle it, go for it… Worst comes to worst, you can always drop a class later on (be sure to check until which date you are allowed to drop a class as most schools have a date limit). However, I’d suggest taking around 15 credits instead during your first semester… Take some time to get used to college life, make some new friends, join some clubs, etc. The last thing you want to do during your freshman year is spending it buried in your books.

By the way, I’ll have respectively 13, 12 and 9 credits during my next three semesters (I stretched my degree on four years and a half [with one and a half remaining] and took a class this summer). I’m in the Student Union though and that easily takes 10-15 hours per week, so that’s why I’m taking a lighter load. That last semester (Fall 2010) is going to be awesome though :)

18 isn’t too much

It’s very reasonable, I take 18 credits and work

Topics in Econometrics (4)
Industrial Organization (4)
Financial Markets and Analysis (4)
Intensive Intermediate Spanish (6)

I put all my classes on two days a week and intern at NBC Universal the other three days.

My GPA going into my senior year is 3.71

I’m taking 18 too, well sort of. I have the option to make one of the classes only worth 1 credit, so it could be 17 credits. All depends on what I choose. Here’s what I have:

Intro to Engineering [1]

Intro to Logic Systems & Design [5]

Calculus 1 [5]

Other People, Other Faiths [5]

Percussion Ensemble [1-2]

That’s not so bad because in my school it would only count as 14 credits o.O

Biology (4), Chemistry (4), English (3), Calculus (3) . Most students take this option anyway.

I took Bio I , Chem II, Physics I, Intro to BME and Cal II and it was only 16 credits. It wasn’t bad but I had a horrible schedule, so I didn’t get as much time as I wanted to study.

Make sure your classes aren’t like 8 in the morning and end at like 9pm like mine did.

Do you have any merit based scholarships at the school that are dependent on your GPA to retain them? If so I would suggest erring on the side of being cautious with your 1st semester classes. I have known some top students lose their scholarships in the 1st year by taking too difficult a load because they underestimated the difference between HS and college classes.

every single business student in the freshman courses here take 18 credits since one course is (6) credits, in addition to 3 4-credit courses. i felt like i had no class compared to high school, lol - so not difficult at all

I am registered for 17 credits. 6 classes. One class is a 1 credit online Intro the the Internet course LOL I tried to get out of it but its required for my degree. I’ll just bore it out like I did that 1 credit html course haha. I didn’t even buy the book for that one.

Anywho I have never taken 17 cr before but I think I will be fine.

my friend is taking 22 his freshman year at NYU.
