For an average college junior, is taking 18 units (6 classes) all of which are major subjects too much?
I'll be taking Advertising Management, Sales Management, Marketing Research, Info Tech Application in Marketing, International Business, and Buyer Behavior all at the same time...if it is too much, which subject should I drop? Thanks!

Try it until the add/drop period. You really can't tell until you've sit in on a few classes and learn what the expectations from the professor will be. If after a class or two you feel that you can't keep up with the work, drop one.

"Units" at all schools are different. At some schools average is 4 credits or units per semester, so 18 would be pretty ridiculous. Just going off by the fact that you said 6 classes, that seems high? But again, you have to give the norms for your school.

I actually plan on taking 18 credits as well. I've never taken more than 15 though, so things could get interesting.

To answer your question, I say no, it's not too much, however is there a particular reason you are doing this? I am taking the extra course because I want to finish up with undergrad classes and take 2 MBA level courses - otherwise I'd probably just roll with 15.

18 units where? Harvard? or 18 units at mt sac?

No. 18 credits is about average at my school.
And I assume by units, you mean 1 hour a week per credit (or 2 hours of lab a week per credit)

Yes, 3 units = 3 hours a week, so one unit= one hour a week. I'll be taking them in University of Delaware. I had to cramp so many units cuz, I'll only be there as an exchange student and would want to make the most out of my stay there.

Yeah, its not so bad... only 18 hours of class a week, thats roughly 3-4 classes a day. I've currently got 20 hours of class a week and I have to deal with my job in the regiment, sports and all the classwork that comes from this.

You shouldn't have a hard time

k314sig09 Wow, that's alot..good luck! and thanks!

I think its alright, just manage your time wisely. I had 18 units all last year (and this year) but it didn't really seem all that different. However 2 U classes sometimes feel just as work heavy as 4U classes...

Try it out and drop whatever classes you need to before the drop deadline. While 18 units is a lot, classes vary WIDELY in the amount of time the require (either in studying, homework, labs, etc). Your classes probably don't have any labs or essay, so it's a matter of how much time/effort you put into your reading and homework sets.

I have about the same as the OP as a freshman... I'm quite concerned.

I've taken 19 before. It was definitely annoying, but I managed.

Assuming you're reasonably capable, you'll have a lot of work ahead of you but you should be fine.

If you're a junior, you should already have a sense of how manageable this should be along with your other responsibilities. Yes, upper-division courses are harder than lower-division courses, but you're also a much better prepared student now than you were when you entered as a freshman. If you are really concerned, you might want to talk to a professor who knows you in your department about what they think.
