Well, im registered to take 18 units next semester, which is 7 classes. Geology lab/lec, Women and health, english 98, 2 apparel design classes, and political science. I have class Mon-Fri. Is this too much?! I mean there not hard classes...but its just that I failed one class(world geography) this semester and im in remedial english which I receive no credit for. so im basically getting 6/12units. So, I would be really behind in my GE requirements and the total amount of units to transfer. I would like to transfer to CSU Long Beach hopefully by fall semester of 2011. I would also like to get a part-time job on the weekend too...idk..should I drop one class? Anyone took this much units before?

Personally I wouldn’t take seven classes at a time…at my school the average number of classes is five and we’re allowed to overload for six classes, but not more than that. If you failed a class and were in a remedial class last semester I would definitely drop at least one class.

You must go to CSUN.

Are you sure that is 18 units, or is that 19? Sounds like 19 to me.

I don’t think it is possible for you to take 19 units plus a part-time job on the weekend. But then again, these classes are really easy. Especially how English 98 sounds…but you probably have difficulty with English and it’ll be slightly difficult for you maybe?

Geology and the Geology lab are going to be time consuming. Overall, I took 18 units before and I would not recommend a part-time job on the side unless you want your performance to suffer.

Classes may not be difficult, but they’re time consuming nonetheless.

awill430-why do I must go to CSUN?! Hell no, im outta there in two years! I’m so sick of that crappy school. Everything sucks. The biggest mistake I made in my life! Ok, hmm…yah they are time consuming…im going to drop political science since history is my weakest subject. Ya, it sounds like 19 units…but the lab is only 1 unit. So, its 18.

ooh oops…I read it wrong…sorry.

POLS 155, I presume is what you are/were enrolled in, correct? Political Science has nothing to do with History. I don’t know why you dropped that class, to be honest (if that is the class you were planning on taking).

The only thing I would consider history from that course is the fact that you have to go over the Constitution and what not early on. But other than that, there’s a clearly defined line between the two.

You’re confusing though…the lab is 1 unit, I am aware of that. You’re taking 7 classes. 1 which is a lab. You’re taking 19 units.

You may think the lab is nothing, but let me tell you that the lab is probably going to be more involved than the class itself.

No, I am positive its 18 units because my FCS 170 class is 2 units. Oh, I thought Political Science was related to history. Well, I would like to start taking science classes next semester and just get it over with. Its either Geology or Biology. I heard Biology is much tougher. Chem and Physics will not be taken in consideration because I never liked it back in high school. Astronomy class is already full. What science class did you took last semester?? I don’t like learning politics so that’s why I dropped it, I would rather take Women and Health instead.

Also, I really dislike CSUN because the professors doesn’t teach good(ones ive encounter last semester),
most people from the campus are rude, unfriendly, and snotty(at least they act like they do), few resources,
boring location…there’s really not much to do in that city. CSUN its just not for me, I thought it would be okay…but I was totally wrong. I turned down Woodbury University who offered me $7,500 scholarship(4 years) for CSUN. Now, I kinda regretted. I didn’t attend because the tuition was so expensive(40k a year)! So, it was kinda between CSUSB and CSUN after I turned down Woodbury. CSUN was like my back-up school, I never expected that I was going to attend here. Now, I just really want to just get out of Northridge and attend CSULB(a much better college!).

What year are you by the way?

Good to know. I understand.

The science classes I took was Geography and Astronomy. Astronomy is really watered down which makes it easy. Geography was not bad either, but it is really boring.

Biology is not too bad if you taken it in high school. You’ll be familiarized with things you once learned or came across, back in the day.

I’m a sophomore – and sophomore standing at the moment.

I kinda agree with you on your complaints. I wish the dorm experience could be better for one… I’m content with CSUN myself though…probably because I’d rather be here than where I grew up lol.

I’ve taken 22 units.

I’ve seen 27 units.

Don’t sweat it as long as you work hard. 19 is not that difficult if there’s overlap between courses.

awill430-Oh, haha. I took Geography 150 last semester and failed it My prof was Samantha Kadar. I think she made a mistake in my grade since I got C’s on all of my exams except one I got a B. I think I boomed the final though…but it still wouldnt average out to a F…so I emailed her and ask her about it. I agree, geography is soooo boring! I guess it depends on the professor.

Oh, how was the dorms at CSUN? I’m a first year. I live off-campus last semester, but it was nightmare because I lived with an older lady, so I was really lonely…especially since I dont know how to drive/or have a car yet. Are you planning to transfer out?

I heard people say most people who attends CSUN are transferring out to USC or UCLA. haha.

I took 19 units this semester and found it pretty manageable. As long as all your classes aren’t super demanding you should be OK.

if your parents are paying for everything and you dont have to work or buy groceries or pay the bills or do your own taxes and what not, then you should be fine.

If you do any number of those things, just manage your time well.

I don’t plan on living in the dorms next academic year. But I’m enjoying myself at the moment. The dorms are okay, I like my roommates and everything, but its like a ghost town on the weekends, and right now for a matter of fact. It’s like…if there is no class, there’s no point to be here… so like commuter students, student residents leave as soon as they can. Really takes away from the sense of community, I think.

Anyways, I don’t think the dorms are worth it. Without a car, it sucks, getting food and ****. I hate on the weekends when I walk on campus, everything is closed. So you’re going to have to do a lot of walking if you want to get food, etc. I don’t like Gerinomos are whatever it is called… they serve the same food everyday. It gets sickening.

I don’t plan on transferring out. I intend to graduate in 2012 from here. But I’m going to move out of the dorms and get an apartment as soon as the Spring is over. :)

haha yeah I heard the dorms arent that great…im planning to move out next semester maybe to an apt or a house. Most people who attends CSUN are transferring out…ughh its a drag to go to that school. Where are you from?? I live in SD for over 10 years. I should have went to SDSU instead. All my close friends are at SD, in CSUN…its soo hard for me to make friends cuz I dont know anyone…especially since I live off campus. :(

My son is a sophomore at CSUN and moved off campus this year. He likes the apartment MUCH more than the dorms. Try Meridian Place on Reseda. It’s expensive but if you double up, its cheaper than the dorms. Beautiful place.

My first semester, I took 16 credits, no job, and easily pulled down a 4.0. My second semester I took 18 credits, and had a part-time job and got A’s and one B+.

This semester I’m taking 18 credits again, but working 30 hours a week, and am going to pull down A’s and one B.

It’s very manageable. I don’t get as much sleep as I would like (usually running on 6 hours of sleep a week…but I make up for it on Sunday, sleeping into whenever I want).

I’ll be working 30 or so hours again this semester, while taking 20 credits. As long as you don’t have ball busting class after ball busting class you can easily manage those credits.

I always like to look at it as number of classes rather than credits anyhow. I used to have 7 classes in high school, so I just keep that in mind, and remind myself that I only have 6 classes (for my 20 credit hour semester)…only I’ll be in actual class for about 15 hours less a week than I was in high school.

oh ok thanks…

18 hours sounds like a lot, but I think you might need to start checking something else. I don’t know too much about Cal St Long Beach but for four year colleges I am aware when I see something like “2 apparel design courses” I start to wonder whether you are taking courses that can be transfered to a four year college because those sound like courses for which you will get no credit toward the transfer and thus will not count in your accumulation of hours and courses needed to transfer. If your plan is really to go to CSLB in 2011 then you need to lay out some kind of plan on how you are going to get there and that includes making sure that you are taking courses for which CSBU will give you credit. Thus, you should check to assure you are signing up for courses that are transferable.

Did you have trouble getting into SDSU? Anyways, I understand that it is hard to make friends living off-campus. It is a lot easier in the dorms because you come across and see many people, some of the same, from time to time.

I use to live off campus and then I commuted a semester.

I would recommend that you maybe get involved on campus, as a solution for the difficulty of making friends. I know you’re already pretty annoyed with the school experience and all, but joining of a club or some organization or something could really be key to improving your experience, I guess.

BTW, to answer your question: I grew up in the Antelope Valley.

drusba- oh okay thanks for the advice. I will check to see if its transferrable.

awill430-No, actually…I graduated high school with SDSU compact for success which is garaunteed admission…but I didn’t apply…so it wasnt an option. If I did apply there, I would have got in automatically since im in the compact for success program.

Yes, I’m in the TRENDS fashion club…but I missed like half of the meetings cuz it conflicts with my geography class. I might join some other clubs next semester though.
