Hi! I’m going into sophomore year this school year, and I have to decide whether or not I take APUSH. Here are the classes I’m planning on taking/ afterschool activities
-AP comp sci
-APUSH??
-Honors pre-calc
-Honors chemistry
-cross country & lacrosse (different seasons)
please let me know if taking APUSH would be too much sophomore year. I keep getting conflicting opinions on it. Also I have a free period this year.
There are no options for honors english soI’m taking regular andI’m taking advanced conversational spanish. Freshman year we don’t have the option of taking APs, so I only took honors geometry.
Nobody here knows your academic abilities, your school’s level of rigor etc. My best advice is to work with your guidance counselor and teachers to create a schedule that is challenging yet manageable for you.
In general, if your school has few honors classes but has APs, than two and two are good. However, APUSH is one of the tougher classes - have you taken honors American History? If so, APUSH may be doable.
Honors pre-calc is a good class for Sophomore year, as is honors chem. I assume that you are looking at AP Calc and AP Chem in your junior year.
My teacher recommended that I take APUSH and told me I should take it yet my science teacher said taking it would be pushing myself too hard sophomore year. I did not take honors history this year I took world civilizations
This is completely dependent on your skills, ability, work ethic, etc., which no one here knows. I’d suggest working with your counselor and parents, who can get data from your teachers, and provide better insight.
FWIW, my D had two AP courses, two college dual enrollment courses, and two honors courses (plus gym/health and band) as a Sophomore and finished with five 100s, two 99s and a 98. So it can be done. But she has a proven track record of both talent and work ethic.
btw - which AP CS? They are quite different. My D took CSP as a Freshman and had no issues - she enjoyed the class. CSA is a good bit more difficult.
Since you have a high GPA and it’s a class strong students take sophomore year, you should take APUSH. It’s one of these “core” AP’s.
All in all, your getting almost all A’s freshman year is a good indication you should be able to take the most rigorous schedule your school offers, which seems to be 2 APs and 2 honors + 2 regulars.
Have you had some experience with programming? If not it might be a better idea to start with CS Principles.
Ok, sounds like you have the background you need then!
I’d say go ahead, I can’t see this being “too much”… but if need be you should know to drop to US History Honors just in case.
