Is taking summer math worth it??

Qwerty: What?

What grade are you in right now?

If you’re a sophomore in Geometry, take it.

If you’re a freshman in Geometry, don’t bother (unless you really want to, then go ahead).

If you think you will enjoy it and it is worth it, absolutely! :]

I wish you the best of luck on your decision!

Qwerty: I’m a sophomore…thanks for your opinion!

Trumpetgrl: Thanks! :] I would definitely rather spend my time doing something else, but in the long run, it will be worth it. Oh & in terms of EC’s (you mentioned that you don’t love Math Team), I realized a little while ago that you should really just do what you love. If you’re putting your heart and soul into something that you love, that passion will shine on your application. High school will be a lot less painful if you do that … Schoolwork is the annoying part that everyone dislikes, EC’s are supposed to be things that you enjoy doing.

8th grade Geometry would have been a bore if I didn’t have an awesome teacher.

Haha, thank you #1 Person.

Oh haay, you’re the kid that got into Yale with a 3.7 GPA!
You’re my idol.

I’m going to have a 3.7 GPA and I want to go to Yale

That’s weird that you have to pay so much money. I’m taking a couple classes at a local JC and the program is absolutely free, minus the cost of textbooks. I was thinking about taking a math class this summer, but because it is 6 intensive 4-day weeks I’m just gonna wait 'til the school year next year. Granted I’ll be a senior with less classes, and it will be like Calc 3 or something. But I was in your position a couple years ago and was sort of screwed by the system. Ask you teachers about enrolling in the pre-calc class you want without the Algebra 2 prerequisite. See what they say about self-studying the material on your own; I think it would be very doable for you to go through the material on your own. That wouldn’t require any money. My school doesn’t really allow that, but you should definitely ask. $400 is alot to pay if there’s another viable solution.

Supercool: Thank you for your comment. I just found out some pretty bad news today… This class is only meant for students who have failed the course and are retaking it for credit! :frowning: I’ve asked all of the department heads and guidance counselors in my school. Apparently, there’s not a single program that allows high school students to take a summer class and move up in a certain subject area. It’s absolutely ridiculous! Sorry, but what is a JC?

Is there anyone here who lives in CT and knows of classes that I can take which will award me high school credit? (not for failing students, just for ones that want to move ahead)

junior college :)

$400? Try your local CC. Mine gives concurrent HS students the course for free, excluding some stuff (total $14) and materials.

For materials, try your local library. Instead of buying a $60 book, I just had to pay $5 in overdue fines.

I haven’t taken a summer course yet, but I’m going to this summer. It’s also math, and intensive. If you aren’t that good at math, or don’t know the subject at least a little bit beforehand, don’t do it. Tests are supposedly going to be every week. Algebra II introduces a lot of new stuff. But, on the other hand, if you are successful ,it’ll be really beneficial. If anything, you’ll be better prepared for your other courses.

Summer math is definitely worth it. Talking from experience.

You could try self-studying it. Ask your teacher for a pre-calc book (assuming you’re at that level). It could save you that $400, but it’s up to you, and this is coming from a really poor guy who pretty much has to self-study in order to bump myself up a grade level (I can’t afford private tutoring or EC classes for math).

I’m not allowed to self study  I have to take a course taught by a CT certified teacher, plus pass the final.

Ugh… still no luck in finding a free high school credit program. I found a high school credit program in my area, but it costs over $1,000 for 6 weeks of Algebra II!

What about Have you considered Online HS in your state? Or some other online program?

Thanks, MIThopeful… I did find an online HS in CT but I think that it would be very difficult for me, seeing as I’m not very good at math to begin with. I need to be able to interact with my teacher, as well as classmates.

Nah, go enjoy your summer because in 5 years you’ll be taking 2, 3 or 4 math class / year and it won’t matter what you are in now.

Ah, ok I see. Well, whatever works for you.
