Is taking summer math worth it??

I'm behind in math because I wasn't in honors math as a freshman. I'm considering taking Algebra II over the summer from June 28 - July 30 at a local h.s. The class costs $400 and is from 8:30 - 10:30, M-F.

If I do take this course, I can take H PreCalc next year, as the majority of juniors do (w/ the exception of students who are behind or the few Asian math geniuses)

My question is: Do you think that this time (2 hrs every morning) would be better spent:
relaxing, reading, doing pre-A.P work, studying/taking practice SAT's & ACT's, working out, working, etc?

P.S: the cost of the course isn't a problem.

Yes, being in advanced math is almost always worth it.

Yup. It’s not like you’d be awake at those times during summer anyway, so you’re really only losing out on a few hours of sleep. And sleep is overrated anyway.

Yup, you’re probably missing only 1 hour of productive time out of your summer life and 1 hour of sleep… and this is definitely more productive than anything else! Go for it, Algebra 2 is the same as Precalculus and it’s good to take Calculus in high school.

If you want to do something mathy in college, do it. If you want to do something humanities related, don’t, unless you want to go to HYPSM.

I think you should do it :D

It shows that you are determined to do well and are productive. (:

Why would you have to pay $400 for summer school?

My thoughts exactly.

I have to take trig classes over the summer :\ I am obligued to so that I will be ready when Math Team competitions start. Mine are free

Not sure…I couldn’t find any free summer school classes in my area

Wait, Alg II & Precalc are the same? Which math class do juniors in your schools take?

Trumpetgrl: that sucks… do you like Math Team though?

Do it, ace your placement test in the fall and move forward in math. Summer school will give you structure for the month. After the class, have your ride drop you off at the library and study for your SATs, do your math homework whatever. Then when you go home later you can relax, workout… having done all your work.
Better register soon those classes get filled up.

Eh…It is okay. I do not love it, nor do I hate it. I just do not want them to take up much of my time. My summer is already very busy and I want to have relaxation time.

I am sure I will probably enjoy them once I attend.

Thanks for your feedback, everyone. I’ll go for it!

Trumpetgrl: Why do you do it if you don’t love it? :]

Looks good on college apps.

A rather lame reason to do anything really…

If your interested in anything math/science related, certainly do it! If you doing it only to “look good for college,” I would say your time could be better spent relaxing/doing something productive you actually want to do.

I want to be a surgeon…

Guidance counselor said to go ahead and learn it. Then I have to go AP Calc so that I can get that Math credit in and not have to take the college level.

I usually love math! The only reason I do not at the moment is that I have a 97% in Geometry. Also, I am not fond of Geometry. I am an Algebra fanatic :b

1: If you’re talking to me - My interests/EC’s are based around the environment, writing & the arts. I am behind in math & science so I thought that I could improve my college app by moving ahead.

Okay, so you’re finishing up your sophomore year right now? Okay, go ahead and take it. If you’re finishing up your freshman year right now, then don’t worry about it, just keep on with what track you’re on.

trumpetgrl: is a 97% bad for you or something???

It was a 99% It dropped.
