Is taking the Japanese SAT Subject test worth it?

I signed up for the Bio, math and Japanese SAT subject tests in November. However I’m just wondering if I should drop Japanese because people are telling me it won’t be useful.I’m taking it with the thinking that it will help strengthen my application since I’m not Japanese myself and self studied.I know up to JPLT N2 kanji so I think I should be set for the test and do relatively well.I don’t have any other extra curriculars other than being a manager at my part time job so I wanted something else to show for.I just don’t know if colleges will care that I took the Japanese subject test.

Well, unless you are applying to Georgetown, they won’t care that you take 3 Subject Tests. And if you’re not applying to colleges that consider Subject Tests, they won’t care about any of them.

For those colleges that do consider Subject Tests, if Japanese is one of your top 2 scores, and you’re not applying for engineering, then it’s fine. Whether you’ll score well enough of Japanese so that your score surpasses Match or Bio is something none us us will know. Good luck.

Having said that, even if Japanese is not one of your top 2 scores, a good score could, depending on the college, exempt you from the foreign language graduation requirement.

I’m with @skieurope on the last point. A good score can help with FL exemption or placement, depending on college and your intentions for Japanese study.

If it’ll help mostly just with placement then I might just take the JLPT itself or the AP Japanese exam! Thanks for your response it was pretty helpful!

Few colleges will accept the JLPT for placement purposes, FYI.
