Is TCNJ any good?

I just got my acceptance letter from TCNJ (The College of New Jersey, formerly Trenton State).

They accepted me plus 2,500 per year and a computer for my major of Mathematics teacher prep.

My question is: Are they a legitamtely good school? Campus is beautiful, and I hear great things, they aren't ranked like other schools b/c they dont offer PhD's, but they are ranked at the very top of schools granting masters and barrons just ranked them most competitive.

I've already been accepted to Binghamton, and to Albany (Presedential scholar).

I'm still waiting to hear from Lehigh, Cornell, and Delaware.

Stats: top 10% 1390...

Hey, I actually started a thread about this about a week ago (I think it's on the 2nd or 3rd page of this board). I think it's a good education for a good price, but I've heard some bad things about the social life there (not a big issue for me, though). It's what's known as a "suitcase" school in that many ppl go home for the weekends. However, I think it's a good public school that's slowly making itself known. My counselor recommends it over the SUNY's or Rutgers.

Btw, when did you send in your application? (Just wondering, cuz I sent in mine a few days before the 2/15 deadline and I want to know about when I can expect to receive a response.)

Phantom, it is no longer a suitcase school as much. The percentage of kids that stay on the weekends has increased tremendously over the years (up to high 80's now). Also it is a very legitimate school. The only other school on your list that is better than it is Cornell and that is not even by a long shot. It is right on par with Lehigh and way better than both Binghamton, Albany, and Delaware. It is very well respected. Has great faculty. Great for the sciences as well as many of the arts. Excellent music deparment. And don't rely on the fact that they aren't grouped with the other schools because in a way that's good- they focus on you and you alone. All classes are taught by faculty and the professors are some of the most accessible professors of any of the schools that I visited. I went there on a pretty yucky day last year so I was on the tour by myself so I able to see more than what a normal tour usually does (very personalized) and I was able to peek in professors offices and they are extremely nice. They also just built a beautiful science complex and they are building a lot more as the year goes on including a brand spankin' new library.

If you want to be a teacher in a school, level 1 through 12, TCNJ has a very strong reputation. Well respected and is a plus on your resume for teaching jobs.

agreed. they even have majors devoted soley to those who wish to be teachers.
For example you might have Biology and then you have Biology Teaching, English and then English Teaching, History and then History Teaching...

Something like 90% are from NJ, and since NJ isn't that big it's easy for kids to get home. But I've heard it's less of a suitcase school than it used to be.

It has a very good rep in NJ. I think it is close overall to Lehigh but so much cheaper, altho Lehigh would have the much stronger alumni network. Bing is prob the best SUNY and I'd compare TCNJ to that, but prob put TCNJ a little ahead.

I agree with the other posters: TCNJ is def on the up and coming. It is strong in academics, small classes, good grad rate, solid rep and an affordable price. I've heard about the suitcase rep too, and seeing that most of the students are from NJ & Philly, I'm sure there is truth to this. But I've visited twice already, and I like what I've seen. Now that I've been accepted I decided I'm going to do an overnight visit to see it from a different perspective. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I def haven't crossed it off my list either. Good luck!

TCNJ is already well-known and on its way up. Take it very seriously!
