Is the Act essay required for University of Miami?

I looked on their website and I can’t find any information so I was wondering if anyone here could help me out.

The writing portion of the ACT is required, but it is not used for admission, only for placement.

Does anyone know if you can submit the ACT or SAT with writing after applying–or after being accepted and then just submit it for placement? My son took ACT without writing (our county paid for the sitting but it didn’t include the written part). Just wondering has to submit that when he applies Early Action?

@firstwavemom. Have you asked the school directly? We are in the same situation. Son has taken ACT twice but without writing and is happy with his score. He is not interested in taking it again with writing solely for placement purposes to a school from which he may likely be rejected!

@chable I was avoiding making a call, but I think I may email our AO for our region. I’ll let you know what I find out. In light of all of the schools dropping the requirement, I am hoping Miami will follow suit by July 31.

@firstwavemom. Thanks so much!
It would make sense for Miami to eliminate it. It is the only school on his list that requires it for any reason.
I think he would be fine if he could just take the writing part but is not excited to endure a whole additional test!

Says it is not needed on ACT site…

I did contact an AO from UMiami and learned that the school is in the process of updating the website. ACT/SAT with essay will no longer be used for English Composition placement. I’m glad I asked before registering my son for another ACT (this time with the essay).
