In college admissions, is equal weight given to the ACT vs the SAT? Because my SAT scores aren't stellar (2170), but my ACT is much more impressive (35). Would colleges rather see 2350+ than a 35?

People will tell you no, but in truth most East Coast "elite" schools just plain like the SAT better. You would not be rejected anywhere on the basis of that score though, so for all intensive purposes it's just as good.

I scored 1980 SAT/34 ACT, kind of interesting...

show the ACT. it's a spectacularly good score.

well I'm sending in SAT II's, so doesn't the regular SAT come along with them?

No way man, be proud of that 35. Colleges will sure like to see it!

Since they are measuring the same thing, you'd think that the SAT was anomalous, and that re-taking the SAT would give you a good chance of getting a higher score that corresponds to the ACT.

Send the ACT and your SAT IIs. The SAT score will automatically come along with the SAT IIs, but they'll also see your impressive ACT score.

People who take the ACT are generally people who didn't do well on the SAT...

People who take the ACT are generally people who didn't do well on the SAT...
Or people who live in parts of the United States where the ACT is taken more often... I mean, gawsh, what makes more sense?

"People who take the ACT are generally people who didn't do well on the SAT..."

that's not always true
People who take the ACT are generally people who didn't do well on the SAT...

Around here, everyone takes the SAT. My son's school district paid for all juniors to take the ACT last year, so why not take it. (He also took the SAT)

"People who take the ACT are generally people who didn't do well on the SAT..."

Not neccessarily true. D did way better on ACT than on SAT. Her friend did just the opposite.

People in SAT dominated states who take the ACT generally didn't do well on the SAT. People in ACT dominated states who take the ACT are generally everyone who is going to college.

Well some states require the ACT, don't they. So if you take the ACT as part of the requirement and do well enough, why bother w/ SAT.

BTW, do international students take ACT?

"in truth most East Coast "elite" schools just plain like the SAT better"

There is no evidence for this statement, and it appears to be false. In another thread, TokenAdult challenged anyone to come up with any evidence of this. There was only one college that preferred the SAT and it was by no means elite.

he hasn't given me feedback on that essay yet ><

early action deadline...closing in!

ClassicRockerDad is correct. If more participants here would search for old posts before asking the same question again, I'd have more time to look at enderkin's essay. :p

All U.S. colleges now accept ACT
The ACT, a standardized entrance exam, is now recognized by every university.

also: Do I need to take the Subject Tests in addition to the ACT?
It depends. There are a significant number of colleges whose official policy states that they will accept the ACT alone in lieu of both the SAT and the required Subject Tests. This list includes highly selective colleges such as Yale, Brown, Penn, and Duke. http://www.compassprep.com/subject_faq.shtml#faq12

I took the ACT, scored a 33 and said to hell with studying more, dumping 50 bucks and wasting a Saturday... the SAT and College Board can kiss my a$s.

Also, I'm from NY.

However, my triumph over CB was short lived. I promptly changed my SAT registration to subject tests and sat down and cracked open the review books...

So no, I never even took the SAT so not all students who submit only the ACT did better on it or are from the midwest, some just don't have time to devote to studying for another test, $50 to drop, or don't wanna waste a Saturday!

Really if Ivies et al state they accept the ACT why would they prefer the SAT?

Harvard could make students submit spinal fluid for drug testing and people would do it. Its obviously not some act of charity "oh we'll accept the lowly ACT for those poor cow poke Iowans". They are not trying to make it easier to apply (they still require 3 sub tests)- they honestly just dont care.

"Harvard could make students submit spinal fluid for drug testing and people would do it"

LOL! Davnasca, That's just outstanding! I hope you get in to your top choice!

And TokenAdult, thanks for taking one for the team!
