Is The Business School Harder To Get Into?

Is the School of Business at GWU more difficult to get into than another? Son is very interested in business but is wondering whether applying to CAS will get him in more easily?

Thanks for any stats you have.

I think the hardest to get into are the School of Media and Public Affairs and the Elliott School of International Affairs. Business school may come right after those two. Of course, the very hardest are probably the BA/MS, BA/JD, etc, programs.

Thanks for the info, Peejay. S is applying ED in the Fall and very interested in Business but not sure if he can get in. He's got a 700M, 610CR, and only 530Writing (it's a killer!). Has taken them twice so not holding out much hope for any significant improvement. Will take ACT in October though.

Any thoughts if between applying ED1 and not needing any Fin. Aid will be enough to get him in with his SATs?

Thanks for your thoughts!

There are many people who do better on the ACT than the SAT (and the other way around). How were your sons grades and extra-curriculars? If those were extremely strong, he may have a chance.

Well, he's a B student, having taken all advanced classes and will take 3 APs next year (top 25% of class, although barely!). He's President of a language club and on varsity athletic team, also a few other clubs at high school and a little volunteering for American Cancer Society; he's working at a law firm this summer.

I know the Writing SAT is low, but figured maybe his strong Math score and decent CR score might be okay for GWU?? You don't sound too optimistic though! No boost with going ED1 and no financial aid?

Are you a student at GW? If so, how do you like it?

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions. Appreciate it very much.

It doesn't really matter. Each school (except SMPA) is incredibly easy to transfer into. SMPA is viable, however, it has more particular requirements.

If your son applies ED then he has a decent chance of being admitted. I'm not really in any position to speculate (I'm a student, not an admissions officer), but I would put his chances at about 70%. And you can still improve upon the SAT-even after two tries.

GW can be both magnificient and mediocre simultaneously. It really depends upon what you are studying. International Affairs, Political Science, Business, and Public Affairs are worthwhile, however, everything else is not. I could not justify going to the most expensive school in the country to study say French or History. You'd be better off somewhere else. I'm being candid of course, as I should be encouraging you, as a GW student, to apply to GW.

I think GW can be great for studying history or another of the liberal arts. My D was a liberal arts major and it wasn't the "most expensive school" for her since she got merit aid. As for applying ED or to a particular school, don't try to game the system. Apply ED if GW is truly you first choice school. I think your S has a fair shot since the writing section of the SAT is still not being stressed as much as the verbal and math by most schools. I would be more concerned with his GPA/class rank. I think it's important for him to be at least in the top 25%.

Maybe your daughter has had a different experience than I, but all the classes in history I have taken thus far have been far too easy and rarely diverge from what one may take in high school. They don't encourage you to look at history from another perspective or see things in a different light; they merege require you to regurgitate facts.

Can you double major in two different schools?

Yes, you can.
