Is the competition for BS/MD program this year appears to be stiff?

All,

Based on my interview experience for several BS/MD programs, I have noticed the fact the competition appears little stiffer than previous years. It could be an illusion as well. How do you all feel about this? One part of the reason is the January 2010 SAT was the easiest of all the SATs administered. I know several cc members got a perfect 2400. I did not do that well on the January 2010 SAT except for the Math portion.

In addition, I have noticed few candidates even published research articles and spent considerable amount of time abroad etc. It is a good idea for all of us to start focusing on safety net colleges, in case.

Good luck.

A side note, this year BS/MD CC forum is really horrible. No major involvement by any key players.

Isn’t the competition always stiff? And I would think that most people with 2400s are looking for bigger and better things that BS-MD programs (unless it is at a prestigious undergrad and medical school).

i think it’s true that there aren’t that many people on this year, but i guess we can’t really tell how stiff the competition is until acceptances come out…interview invites don’t really give that good of an indication of the types of students who actually get in to these programs, there are definitely enough people with near-perfect GPAs and SAT scores to fill all of these programs…for most of them it’s all about fit at the school, leadership, medical involvement, and service

IMO bs-md are bigger and better things if it’s something like Rice-Baylor, Brown PLME, Northwestern HPME, UPitt Med Guarantee, USC’s BS-MD, Case Western’s program, and maybe a couple more that I’m forgetting.

I don’t know much about Drexel and Union/Albany, but for the latter, Union doesn’t seem like a great school. It’s really about what you want out of your 4 years of undergrad. Personally, I seem to gravitate towards bluedevilmike and norcalguy’s advice and want to follow the traditional route at a school I love. However, if the school you love also has the BS-MD program, go for it without a doubt!

“A side note, this year BS/MD CC forum is really horrible.”

-I wonder why? Some bs/md applicants expressed their strong desire for NOT having input from others. As a result other bs/md applicants and their parents have been using PM instead of posting thier questions. That could explain why you do not see much.
