lol the southern californians may be laid back, but not the grumbly, stressed out northern californians. midwesterners are the nicest though. no idea about the smartest, but hey, there's gotta be some reason the UC's are some of the best public schools out there...

i really can't imagine what the OP meant by CA doesn't have anything

And there's got to be some reason that California's 2 best schools are in NORTHERN California.

NorCal dominates SoCal. In every way. Don't even try to defend SoCal, because it is impossible. Everyone knows that San Francisco trumps Los Angeles, heck, even BERKELEY trumps Los Angeles. :p

West coast vs. East coast pretty much means California vs. East coast. And we still kick ass. Arnold is doing a good job, he's honest and isn't at all corrupt or deceiving. And we've got the Silicon Valley. Innovation happens here. The East coast still gets better test scores, though.

the fact that none of you mention other west coast states, even though there are decent schools around, just makes california itself that much greater in the "west coast" vs east coast debate. wait till funding starts pouring in for stem cell research. brain drain into california.

ok I am going to speak for the northwest, I live in WA and am very familiar with OR, I find that the best thing about pacific northwesterners is a quirky/liberal kind of intelligence. I can't say that we are more intelligent than those east siders, but as far as generalizations go we are less uppity about intelligence. For those of you who have never been, WA and OR are beautiful (ocean, mountains, sand dunes, even a rainforest!) and I think that generally speaking, this draws a certain kind of person who is intelligent in their own right, but not arrogantly so. There is a lot of money in Seattle and Portland, but I have found that there are people at both ends of the spectrum all over (not just politically speaking.) A friend of mine left WA to attend BC last year and it was quite an adjustment for her, she noticed that people were less polite in the streets and didn't smile like they do back home. I think this is probably just because of the sheer number of people crowded in the city. In Seattle people seem less hurried and more laid back. I don't think that this indicates less intelligence, just a different philosophy on life and how it should be lived. On a side note, it is hard to really define a "west coast" culture as CA, specifically Southern Cal, is so different.

Personally I have never been to the West Coast so I can't really comment...but I can tell you that the East Coast needs to take a chill pill. I have traveled to Arizona and New Mexico, and everyone there is much more pleasant to be around. I live in Connecticut, which is known for its snobby Greenwich people and the beautiful scenery. I have never really felt like I fit in here, basically because I consider myself too friendly to be a New Englander. Not saying that everyone in New England or Connecticut is a stuck-up snob, but they certainly do seem to amass here. Anyway. From my short time spent in the West I can say that in general they do not seem as ambitious or as driven as here, but that might be a good thing. In the Northeast everyone is always in a hurry to get somewhere and people are super competitive. I don't know if the schools out West are like or not. Sorry to ramble :)

I am living in California, and I can tell you that the most students in my school are non-native English speakers, which I think makes people in California seems more stupid than people from East Coast. No kidding, California is the only state that white is minority compares to other racial groups.

I went to Penn. once,I cannot believe their strong sense of honesty: my mom lost her purse in the airport, the unbelievable part is that all stuffs inside that purse are there when we picked it up 1 day later. If the same incident happened in LA, you'd better prepare to cancel all of your accounts and credit cards, because you will soon find out someone whom stolen your purse is now spending your money lavishly.People from East Coast speak better English and nicer to communicate with, they won't make fun on a foreigner, and they are willing to help others.

just because English is someone's second language doesn't mean they don't speak with native-level fluency... i consider English my second language, but i did learn it early on before kindergarten.
