Hello! Does anyone have information on whether the quality of the food has improved ever since the food provider was changed? I’ve heard some very unpleasant things about the dining in the past.
Following. Considering that it’s bloody expensive it should at least rise to the level of meh.
Can I add to this question and ask what vegetarian/vegan options are like?
@byadg123 , your article is not dated, but Fordham changed food service companies 2-3 years ago. Based on the quoted tuition price, my guess would be that this article pre-dates the change.
According to the seach method described in the link, the food article was posted on 8/9/2015

A quick Google search shows that Fordham changed food service providers in July 2016.
The girls we met at LC (at Starbucks a block away) said it got a little better but not much. Maybe RH had more of an uptick.
Or maybe the girls just didn’t like the food. A sample size of 2 isn’t ideal!
Hey! Current LC sophomore here. I ate the food freshman year and used up my entire meal plan, but I will say it’s not ideal. The food is fine, and I never had a problem with food being cooked incorrectly or anything like that. I’ve heard it was really bad the year before they switched from Sodexo to Aramark. There isn’t a ton of variety, and the hours are bad. That being said, starting sophomore year you have a kitchen. Most people I know don’t have a meal plan unless they’re at Rose Hill a lot. There’s a Trader Joes less than ten minutes away and I make my own food. Food probably shouldn’t be a make or break issue, though. New York has awesome food everywhere, and it can even be affordable if you look in the right places. Definitely get the meal with the least swipes and most DCB, Argo Tea is definitely the place where I spent a lot of of DCB my freshman year. In terms of vegan/vegetarian options, it’s alright. The dining hall always has vegan/vegetarian options, but they can get pretty repetitive. I know a lot of people who would get some things from the dining hall and then supplement with other snacks or groceries. If you like eating salads and steamed broccoli and three bean chili with a side of cantaloupe every day, you’ll be in good shape.
Hope this helps! Lmk if you have other questions.
I’d love to hear comments on Rose Hill. I was particularly repulsed by reference to dead bugs and even a thumbtack found in food. I wonder how clean (or not) the food prep is there
@curiositysquared how much should I budget for food on top of the plan? Can you bring an electric teapot or rice cooker?
@byadg123 it honestly depends. You can definitely get away with never eating out and just using the meal plan, but you might go crazy. Freshman year I probably ate out like once a week? Which cost anything from $1 to $25 depending on where we went. I also probably bought snacks at Trader Joe’s or wherever and spent about $10 a week, roughly. There are definitely people who just never use their meal plan and buy all their food off campus, which can get pretty pricey.
You can bring both of those things, but you can’t bring a toaster oven or a hot plate. (Although I totally have a toaster oven in my apartment that we hide under the bed for room checks) Fordham has pretty arbitrary rules that don’t make a lot of sense to me in terms of what’s allowed in the dorms.
Room checks? I’m picturing guards storming in and flipping everything over like Orange is the New Black, or Shawshank!
Haha, your RA just comes in every month or so to make sure you don’t have candles or tapestries or any other arbitrary contraband. They announce them ahead of time and can’t open any drawers, so as long as you’re not dumb you can get away with a lot.
My Soph roommate became an RA in ‘82-3. I’ll ask what they did. I don’t recall ever being raided.
Tapestries?
When my S was at Fordham I think the RAs checked the rooms before semester break and perhaps also before week long breaks. It took two seconds and was not a big deal. Just be sure no “contraband” is in full view.
In terms of food, he was at RH before the switch to Aramark. He thought the food was tolerable and after sophomore year he had a kitchen and rarely used dining services.
@byadg123 Tapestries are wall decorations that are basically big sheets with designs on them. They’re banned at Fordham because they’re fire hazards.
@curiositysquared - My question wasn’t actually “Tapestry? What’s a tapestry?”
rather
"Tapestry? College kids hang tapestries? What happened to the poster of Einstein with his tongue out, or MCEscher, or hot musicians/actors/actresses, or street signs?
@byadg123 Posters and street signs are not tapestries. Tapestries are made of textiles. Everyone has posters on the walls. (FWIW - I don’t know if tapestries are allowed or not by Fordham). But this is way off topic from the OP’s question.
555 still have kitchens? Also - there is great food on Arthur Ave. Go Rams!
