Is the fresman 15 only a myth?

Is it? I would love to gain 15 pounds...I really need it because I am 5'11 and weigh about 120 pounds...I am skinnier than a toothpick...

Nope. I gained EXACTLY 15 pounds. I was 160, I gained all the way to 175. I've since lost about 3-5 pounds again. I'm about 6'.

no way. 2 years ago, this star swimmer from our school went to college. One year later, he came back and had gained 30 pounds.

are we talkin about 15 pounds of fat or muscle

I'm 5'10" and stayed at a consistent 145 lbs. through my first semester.

i'm 5'10" i went from about 120 lbs to about 117 lbs after my first quarter...and i thought i ate more that ever at school too! hrm...must have lost it all to stress during finals week...:)

My cousin gained 15-20 pounds in his first year, and he's like 5'3'' 140 lbs now. Another cousin gained a lot of weight in his first 2 years, but lost like 30 lbs or something and looks skinnier than when he entered college.

Some of my friends actually lost a lot of weight in the first few years of college. I think mostly it was from not eating properly (skipping meals and eating nothing but cereal and granola bars), but one of them also started frequenting the gym and running. My brother lost some weight as well. Freshman 15 is due mostly to beer and too much pizza, so it's good to know that my buddies aren't alcoholics.

If you want to gain weight, eat more good food but also work out more. Otherwise you're just packing your arteries. You'll regret that when you're 35 and can't eat a candy bar without getting flabby arms.

I think its a myth.
I went to a forum at a college during the summer bewteen my 10th and 11th grade year. We did all the basic colllegy stuff, except we had meetings to go to instead of classes. I ate like a horse that week, and still lost 10 pounds from all the walking.

It's not a myth, but it's not inevitable either. My sister worked out 2-3 times a week and was able to lose weight, but with so much food around you have to watch yourself

wow. i am so looking forwar to colleg now.

Actually speaking in Economic terms, freshman 15 is no myth. Here's why: Marginal Cost = 0 = Marginal Benefit. Usually freshman have no choice but to be on the 21 meal plan which consists of 3 meals per day. What's usually the case is you can eat as much food and as many times as you want. This is usually an incentive for students to get back on line and grab more ice cream, chicken, pizza, etc. Also the amount of money you pay for room and board is a sunk cost, meaning once you pay for it, you can not do anything about it. You can't get your money back and you can't switch to the 14 meal plan (freshmen). Thus it's in the student's best interests to eat 3 meals a day and go back for seconds.

Now that was speaking in terms of Economics. Frankly, I think freshman 15 depends on the individual. Lots of students stay in shape, drink, eat a lot during the night, skip meals, eat unhealthy, etc. It's pretty normal in college. But then again, if you're a person whose conscious about his weight in college, you should not worry too much about freshman 15. The best advice I could give is eat in moderation and exercise.

haha screw education. i am going to college to gain weight. does it have to be just freshman year? i wish i gain weight every year

i think i got the freshman -15 and im pretty small already

I got the freshman -25 my first term. Better than Atkins!

I gained less than 10 lbs my freshman year (01-02). But between May 2003 and September 2004 I went from 193 lbs to 230 lbs. I'm 6'1". I felt pretty crappy. I put on some upper-body muscle but a lot of abdominal fat (Burger King and Arbys with no exercise will do that). Now I weigh 221 lbs according to a digital scale at my doctor's office. I slimmed down a little and put on some more muscle. I feel a lot better than I did at 230, plus I drink a lot less pop (or soda) and feel less bloated.

I weighed 180-185 lbs when I was in peak physical condition with low body fat. I was a pretty good shot putter in high school.

I'm not in college... but I think gaining weight has something to do with drinking. Just a theory, but isn't college when everyone starts drinking? So don't be an alcoholic!

Actually I haven't touched a drop of alcohol, and I've still gained 20 pounds since I started college. I was really skinny before though (102 lb) so it's not a huge problem.

I don't mean to be a hater, but gaining 20% of your body mass IMO is a problem. When I saw Super Size Me the dietician woman said gaining 10% of body mass in a short amount of time puts tremendous strain on your organs. I only say this as a precaution and I could be completely wrong - just my own $.02

I completely see your point, MrHappyFace, and appreciate your concern. :) I might be more concerned myself, but I'm actually inclined to believe I wasn't 102 in the first place - my weight always hovered between 110 and 117, maybe 107 on a bad day. 102 seemed kinda strange to me, but that was the last thing the scale said before I went to school so I dunno ...
