Hello guys, I was checking out the premed guide today, and I found something rather surprising. In the accepted/applied chart for class '05 premed students, only 35 got 3.8 GPA or above. But the thing is, right now I know about 10 freshman premeds getting 3.8 GPA or above, and I really don't think I know 1/4 of the premed with highest GPA.. So am I missing something here? Or is it like premeds now are working much harder and are smarter? So for class '11 premeds, we would have like 50 people getting 3.8+ GPA? And this would make the competition much worse. I just want to know my chance at med school admission. (:

Also I can safely assume that GPA would only go up right? Since course medians are generally B- for intro classes, B+ for 300 levels, and A- for 400 levels. Thanks guys for your help!

It will all even out in the end. Aren't you a freshman? Aren't you forgetting about orgo and physics? What about the MCAT? Don't worry, there are plenty more opportunities to get weeded out along the way. You can rest in peace knowing that.

I also don't need to remind you how faulty your statistical calculations are. Perhaps, you are only attracted to smart people and that's why you have so many friends with high GPA's. Heck, during my junior year, everyone living my house had 3.8+ GPA's.

And, no, your GPA may or may not go up. Yes, the medians in upper level courses are higher but the people in upper level courses are more dedicated and smarter. The guy who took intro bio only cuz he wanted to be premed and ended up with C+'s isn't going to be taking Bio281 Genetics or Bio631. I've found the difficulty of intro and upper level courses to be roughly the same.

Not that this is what you should be worrying about. Do your best and worry about things you can actually change.

I see.. thanks for the advice and more stats norcalguy. Yea I guess GPA may not go up, nothing's for sure anyways, but the fact that all the AEP courses I will take next year all have A- medians probably means my GPA isn't gonna drop. er w/e I will stop asking about premed things, it's a muddy water to begin with.
