Hi narbiglets,

I graduated SU and its Honors Program a couple years ago. I’ll try to keep this concise.
I accepted the Honors offer upon SU admission because the honors program at the flagship state school from my hometown is very rigorous/prestigious/stimulating. As it turned out, SU’s Honors Program was something entirely different and I was wrong to assume they would be similar. Having found this out pretty quickly, the main reason I stayed is that my major made fulfilling Honors requirements fairly easy. Here are some pros and cons.
PRO
-It may function as a resume stuffer upon graduation.
-Honors students get to choose classes earlier in the process.
-Honors Cafe = free restaurant buffet couple times a semester.
-Pretty Honors medal to wear at commencement
-‘Honors Living Community’ in nicer dorms freshman year
-Sometimes the program will bring in an interesting guest lecturer.
-The Capstone Thesis may noticeably enrich an undergrad program that doesn’t require a thesis and help connect with faculty for research.
-The required community service can turn out to be fun if you find the right type for you.
CON
-Of all the classes Honors made me take, one was exceptional and the rest were jokes.
-Requirements may be a pain to fulfill depending on your major(s). THIS IS KEY
-You will quickly notice that the program is largely posturing with little content.
-Hot chocolate powder in the Honors Lounge runs out 15 minutes after being restocked.

If the above pros outweight the cons for you, go for it! My review was on the harsh side, but I do not regret joining and staying in Honors. If you decide against the program but still want to challenge yourself at SU, double- or triple- major. The rewards of that will be much more real.
