I got a D as my final grade in Geometry Honors in my freshman year. Is the Military Academy impossible at this point?

Not at all. I got a D in Calculus first semester senior year, and was still accepted. I did have to write a letter about why I got a D…

Can you retake it during summer school and replace the grade? I’d be more worried if the D was reflective of your understanding of the material, since math builds on basic concepts from year to year. Trig will be harder without a solid understanding of geometry.

What was the reason for your D in calculus?

Calculus was not for me. Pushed my math understanding past where it worked. High school, I had one on one sessions with my teacher, a tutor, and I sweated that course for hours, every day. Did. Not. Sink. In. Some people don’t understand the concept behind literary analysis, I was not one for “computing the definite intergral of a function by using any one of its infinitely many antiderivatives.” That’s from Wikipedia, I don’t even remember what I couldn’t undertstand!

I wrote a letter basically saying it was a challenge, one I was working on, and not dissuading me from the Academy. I was also prepared to go to Prep for a year, if necessary.

At USMA, I went to a lot of additional instruction and the tests were open note. I slavishly followed the steps in Mathematica, and could get the right answer and show my work, but didn’t actually understand what was going on. Two years of math later, I was done, and moved on. My engineering track was Environmental Engineering, which is less about math, and more about concepts and systems, and I did fine.

More importantly, five years later, I’m a Captain, I’m happy, and I’m successful in my chosen branch. Calculate that!

hey bzzzt if u don’t mind me asking, what was ur gpa unweighted in high school? I am currently a junior and my grades are high b’s and low a’s. i have a very strong extracurricular background and varsity athlete since 7th grade in 2 sports so I, not worried about that. But my gpa unweighted is about a 3.5. i feel as if that is too low. do you think i can get into their prep school?
