i'm a junior in high school, and we recently got our psat results back. i didn't study at all, and i got a 199. i got a 77 on critical reading, a 67 on writing, and a 55 on the math. i'm happy with the cr and okay with writing, but i really want to get the math up. (i'm planning on actually studying, and maybe taking a course-my expectation is at least a 630.) anyway, i was wondering if it's true that the psat is a pretty accurate predicition of the sat? i want at least a 2100, so i'm trying to decide if i should work on my writing score in addition to my math. did your psat results line up with your sat score?
thanks!

Mine did. My scores went from

195 (PSAT sophomore year) to
205 (PSAT junior) to
2010 (SAT first time) to
2120 (SAT second time)

Then I gave up and took the ACT. :p

haha, thanks
what exactly is ON the act? out here in ma, no one takes it at all.

Yes, to a certain extent.

I got a 208 on my PSAT sophomore year, and the a 2090 on the first SAT practice test I took that year.
I got a 220 on my PSAT this year, and I usually averaged in the 2200-2300 range on my SAT practice tests in October. Luckily, I waited til December to take the SAT and got a 2370 :)

From my (limited) personal experience, PSAT scores are somewhat good indicators. I went from 211->236->2400, and many of my friends had similar trends.

Most people I have spoken to get slightly higher SAT scores.

Mine went from about 185 PSAT to a 2070 SAT to a 31 ACT to a 33 ACT.

Usually SAT scores seem to be higher for me and the people I know.
Sophomore PSAT: 190
Junior PSAT: 217

1st SAT: 2210
2nd SAT: 2290

You should definitely try to raise writing along with math, since writing mainly involves simple grammar rules. The essay is my personal weak point though… ^^'

I forget what my freshman and sophomore PSATs were, but I think they were around 180 or maybe even 190. Junior PSAT was 200 and my SAT was 2120.

I forgot them(I have horrible memory), but I remember getting MUCH higher SATs. My PSATs were in the 65-80 percentile, but then I pulled a score over 2000, soooooooo.

My (11th) PSAT: 207
My (11th) October SAT: 2070

Cool - those were taken within the same week I believe.

yes - PSAT is a pretty good indicator. But if you were not familiar with the format and you take the time to study, you will likely do better when you take the SAT. A lot of people do better the second time they take the SAT just because they are more familiar with the test and less nervous.

thanks, everyone- all of your answers were very encouraging. i plan on studying a lot and hopefully acing the SAT (:

Mine did. I took the SAT and got 770M 730W 700CR. Four days later I took the PSAT and got 80M 75W 69CR.

A 77 in CR is like… h e l l a good. Math and writing are the easiest to improve i.m.o. so I really wouldn’t be surprised if you end up getting around 2300 on the SAT if you prep & maintain your CR. Your math score should improve if you practice and know how to attempt all types of problems, while writing is probably the easiest to improve since you just need to memorize grammar rules and have a checklist of what to look for in sentence completions & Error ID.

Good luck! :)

Yes, I got a 180, and on my next practice test got a 1900, then 2000, then 2170 on the real thing.

If you got a 199 without studying you’re in the running for much higher than a 2100. You should aim for 2250. Math is the easiest section to improve on, as long as you maintain steady practice. And plan ahead, as in, start studying earlier. I didn’t practice enough for Math so I never broke 700 as I would’ve liked to. Through a lot of practice, I was able to bring my Math II (subject test) score from 630 to 740. (I understand that the curves are very different, but you can still see that someone with decent math skills can improve to a pretty good score.)

Hmmm… perhaps I was just lazy…
Fresh PSAT - 169
Sopho PSAT - 194
Junior PSAT - 207
SAT 1st - 1790 (yikes)
SAT 2nd - 2030
SAT 3rd - 2240

I’m going to take the SAT soon. Do you think studying would help or should I not worry about it? Here are my PSAT scores (To study I read the packet that I got when I signed up)

Freshman: 218 (Don’t remember)
Sophomore: 235 (80 CR, 76 M, 79 W)

I want to try and get a 2400, but anything 2200+ would be cool

its pretty accurate,
sophomore psat - 170
first sat-1950
junior psat-199
second sat- taking in march!!

PSAT-208
1st time SAT-2300.
I think a true indicator of your SAT score is your preparation time.
But if you didnt practice much, then yes the PSAT IS indicative

You’ll probably get a full score anyway :)
